Dunmore is a town in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,634 at the 2010 census. It lies on the South Branch of the Susquehanna River and is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Dunmore were farmers who began arriving in 1736. They built a log cabin near present-day Dunmore Creek. A post office was established here in 1807, and by 1830 it had developed into a small town with a store, four or five churches, and twenty-five residents. In 1868, when Iron County was created, Dunmore became one of its townships. In 1907, when the village of Scranton was founded about north of Dunmore along the same riverbank as today's Dunmore Creek, ironmining operations came to be located there too and so iron production became an important factor in community development; however, due to environmental problems associated with mining (e.g., air pollution), Scranton dwindled over time while also losing some commercial importance to Dunmore even though it still retains some cultural significance according to many residents today. In 1958, when Interstate 81 bypassed much of Luzerne County east of Scranton (including most of what is now Dunmore), parts of eastern Duquesne County were added to Scranton–Wilkes-Barre MSA becoming part of that area as well (although for all practical purposes these areas remain separate). This left onlyScranton Township within Luzerne County proper; however since much civic activity takes place within that township rather than outside its borders (e.g., elections),Scranton Township remains one unitary government entity with statewide jurisdiction under local control as required by state law despite having no residents living therein other than those who are registered voters therein; in fact both houses thereof are controlled by Democrats while the Republican majority holds sway at the local level inside their limits notwithstanding this political reality because virtually all countywide elected officials hail from just south/central Duquesne County where nearly all economic development occurs while almost none does so inside Scranton Township Limits thereby maintaining effectively perfect party controls at all levels despite its location

Dunmore was founded by Sir Walter Dunmore in 1714. The town is named after him and it is located in the Susquehanna Valley in Pennsylvania. Dunmore is a census-designated place (CDP) and has a population of 9,859 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Dunmore were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered plants and fruits from around the area. In 1714, Sir Walter Dunmore founded the town on land that he had bought from the Lenape Indians. He named his new community after himself because he felt that society should be based on honor and gentlemanly behavior. While living in Dunmore, Sir Walter met another Englishman, James Wolfe, who was also trying to establish himself as a leader in North America. Wolfe convinced Sir Walter to give him some of the land that he had purchased from the Lenape Indians so that he could build a military base for his army. As a result of this friendship between Wolfe and Dunmore, both men were able to gain an advantage over their competitors when it came to power and influence in North America during the early 19th century. In 1827, John Cranch developed what are now parts of Dunmore and Allentown along with other nearby towns into what we know today as Pennsylvania Dutch culture through his establishment of The Upper Cumberland Company. This company was instrumental in promoting agriculture throughout Pennsylvania by providing seeds for farmers to grow crops using traditional methods such as planting beans directly on trees rather than mowing them down like others did at this time. The town of Dunmore was founded by George Dunmore in 1753. It was named after the Duke of Cumberland, who donated land to the town. The first settler in Dunmore was Nicholas Higginson. In 1814, the population of Dunmore was 587 people. On December 1, 1824, it merged with neighboring towns of Ambler and Springdale to form the new borough of Ambler-Springdale.
