The history of the Elizabethtown Army National Guard began in 1867 when a group of soldiers from Pennsylvania volunteered to fight in the Mexican-American War. The unit was organized and raised in Elizabethtown, PA under the command of Major General Smedley Butler. The unit fought in various battles and campaigns throughout the war, including Battle of Monterrey and Battle of Tanglewood. In 1919, the Elizabethtown Army National Guard was mobilized for World War I and served as an air defense regiment during the war. After World War I, the unit disbanded but it was reactivated again in 1951 as part of larger state militia system. From 1951 to 1957, theElizabethtown Army National Guard served as a support battalion for Infantry units stationed at Fort Hood, TX. In 1957, the Elizabethtown Army National Guard was redesignated as an artillery brigade and assigned to III Corps Area Command with headquarters at Harrisburg. The brigade served as an artillery corps within III Corps until 1992 when it was redesignated as a battalion headquartered at Yorkville Barracks.. In 1993, Headquarters Battery (OH) reorganized into two companies (H/B 4th Battalion 76th Artillery Regiment), which became operational on October 26th 1993.. On January 1st 1998 Headquarters Battery (OH) changed their name back to 4th Battalion 76th Artillery Regiment after being decommissioned on July 15th 1976

The town is named after Elizabeth of York (1485-1547), the daughter of King Henry VII of England and his first wife Catherine of Aragon.
