Elizabethtown is a town in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Elizabethtown is located on the Monongahela River and is bordered by Huntingdon Valley to the east and west, as well as Armstrong County to the north. The first settlement in what became Elizabethtown was made in 1798 by John Denny and his family from Kittanning Township in Westmoreland County. In 1821, John Fenton organized a township within present-day Elizabethtown and named it for his wife,Elizabeth (Fenton). Development of the town began soon thereafter with construction of roads and buildings around the original nucleus of homes. In 1828, James Atherton founded a grist mill here that still stands today. Other early businesses included clothing manufacturers Smith & Wesson (founded 1829) and Feldman Brothers (1830). In 1842, Coal Mines Company built its first mine here which continues to be operated today as First Anthracite Coal Mine #1A LLC. The influx of people during World War II led to a dramatic increase in population; by 1951, Elizabethtown had reached 6,000 residents. Many industry newcomers such as steelmakers Alcoa and Bethlehem Steel followed postwar growth in Elizabethtown while retail businesses proliferated including PPG Industries (1952), Mid-American Shopping Center (1958), American Weigh House(1965), Kmart(1969), Sears Roebuck & Co.(1971) among many others over time. Elizabethtown was founded in 1718 by George Washington and his wife, Martha. The town became a seat of government in 1792 and it was renamed Philadelphia in 1801. Elizabethtown is a part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The population of Elizabethtown peaked at over 300,000 in 1920 but has declined since then. A small amount of development has taken place in recent years, however, primarily around the townsite of Elizabethtown Heights.
Elizabethtown was originally settled in 1798 by German immigrants. The town was named for the Elizabeth River, which ran through the area. The first settler in Elizabethtown was Johann Gottfried Herder, who erected a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1800, another German immigrant, Nicholas Wisniewski, built a house on opposite sides of Market Street. In 1802, the town's first school was established and operated for three years. In 1805, the town received its charter from the Pennsylvania General Assembly and became an incorporated municipality. By 1830, Elizabethtown had a population of 500 people and included a post office and two storehouses. The economy ofElizabethtown depended upon agriculture until the 1860s when manufacturing began to enter into the local market. During this time period,Elizabethtown experienced some growth as it became an important hub for transportation and trade within the region. In 1870, however, there were only 20 residents living in Elizabethtown while manufacturing had begun to take off in nearby Philadelphia; by 1900 only 10 people remained in Elizabethtown while commerce had declined overall due to technological advancements such as railroads and automobiles. Despite this decline in economic activity throughout much of the 20th century, many aspects of traditional life still persists today including small businesses (known as "one-room stores"), independent farmers/cattlemen/,and small shops located around Main Street which offer general merchandise items such as groceries or clothing
