The United States Air Force has been providing air support to our nation since 1941. The USAF is responsible for protecting and defending the airspace of the United States and its people. The USAF also provides humanitarian assistance and disaster relief through operations in support of Operation Desert Storm in 1990, Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001, and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006. The USAF has a long history of giving airmen and civilians alike unique gifts. Some of the most famous USAF gifts include: The A-12 Avenger bomber, the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, the KC-135 Stratotanker tanker aircraft, the Boeing 747 passenger jet airliner, and many more. One of the most memorable USAF gift stories took place on December 6th, 1949 when General Curtis LeMay presented Secretary of War James Byrnes with an American B-29 Superfortress bomber known as “Kittyhawk”. Kittyhawk was given to Byrnes as a Christmas present by Major General Curtis LeMay himself. This beautiful bomber was built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation and flew forthe USAAC during World War II before being donated to the USAF by Lieutenant Colonel John Sbumby III from Wichita Kansas on December 1st 1945. In 1978 Lieutenant Colonel Dale Kilduff gave his Me 262 Jetfighter toURLocation Incorporated which became one of America’s first private airstrips outside military boundaries when it opened at Valley Forge AFB Pennsylvania.. LtCol Kilduff had purchased it from Eastman Kodak Company along with several other jets during their bankruptcy auction in 1973

The Erie Air Force Base gift history began in 1944 when the United States Air Forces activated a squadron at Erie. The squadron was called the 4th Fighter Group and it served in North Africa, Europe and the Pacific Theater of Operations. In 1948, the wing was redesignated as the 9th Fighter Wing and it moved to Fairfield Airport in Erie. The wing flew F-86 Sabres from Fairfield into Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. In 1978, flying F-15 Eagle aircraft from Griffiss AFB in New York City arrived at Fairfield for use by the wing. In 2002, due to budget cuts, the 9th Fighter Wing was placed on administrative leave with no active duty members assigned to it. It reopened on 1 October 2002 as an all-majestic flyover training unit and supported local dignitaries during Presidents George W Bush's inauguration parade on 20 January 2009. wingsPAC is home to one of only two aircrews trained to fly UH-1H Huey helicopters while providing aerial cover for military funerals worldwide!
Erie, Pennsylvania is a small city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located on the east bank of the Erie Canal. As of the 2010 census, its population was 727. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and is the third most populous municipality in Allegheny County after Pittsburgh and Oakland. Erie was founded by French traders in 1716 as a fur trading post on the Great Lakes. The City of Erie was incorporated in 1854 and became a dry town on April 15, 1907 pursuant to an act of Congress which provided for such unification under one government. The Erie Canal led to its growth as a transportation center; commerce brought people and goods from New York City, Cleveland, Buffalo and other centers up through Erie to markets along the canal route. The city has experienced heavy industrial development over time; manufacturing now accounts for only about 10% of its total employment but it still contributes more than $6 billion annually to local economies statewide and supports more than 12,000 jobs statewide including 912 jobs in education alone. In recent years however joblessness has become an issue again due to trade-related layoffs which have impacted both manufacturing workers as well as laid off service industry employees who are seeking new opportunities outside their former sectors
I have been a USAF officer for over 35 years. I have observed and interacted with many types of aircraft, both combat and training airplanes. The Air Force gift history is one of my favorite topics to study because it encompasses so many different types of planes and individuals that have contributed to the USAF. One of my favoriteAir Force stories is about the Wright brothers’ first airplane, the Kittyhawk. On July 17, 1903, Clyde Wright flew his Kittyhawk across the US at an altitude of just 21 feet above ground level (AGL). This was an incredible achievement for aviation and set the standard for all future airplanes. The Wright Brothers had originally designed their Kittyhawk as a military plane intended for use by the US Military in World War I during which they would be able to fly at high altitudes and achieve great speeds. However, when America entered World War II, they realized that this type of plane could also be used in air-to-air combat against Nazi Germany’s Luftwaffe aircraft. Accordingly, they developed what became known as the red “Kittyhawks” which were patterned after German Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighters. The American Air Force began purchasing these planes in large numbers in 1942 under Colonel James Doolittle who led Operation Neptune’s Spear which was responsible for destroying six Japanese bombers over Japan on August 14th 1944 using only four American fighter planes! colonel Doolittle is also renown for his role in developing jet technology within the USAF! These days, you can find these planes parked at various US airports across country or stored inside air force bases worldwide! There are countless other examples of people/planes contributing to AFB gifting history such as: First Lieutenant John Averill who flew two Boeing 707 jets into orbit on July 15th 1969; Colonel Charles Beech who commanded 1st Bombardment Wing during Desert Storm; General Curtis LeMay who developed nuclear weapons within USAF; Admiral Rickover who supervised development of USS Enterprise Class submarines; Brigadier General Bob Seamanwho commandeered three Douglas DC-3s Ferrying supplies to troops fighting in Afghanistan; Lt colonel Dave Grossman flying C-130 Hercules cargo flights into Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom; Captain Michael Jurek flying HH-60G Black Hawk helicopter tours throughout Afghanistan etc etc… There are simply too many amazing storytellers here not to mention list them all here! 😉 So what does this mean for our average airforce member? Well obviously there are numerous gifts available from members both Combat and Training Wings representing every branch within the service! But what makes those gifts truly special is how often those members come together again after different deployments or rotations aroundthe world?! Erie, Pennsylvania is a small town in the state of Pennsylvania that was founded on December 29, 1794. Erie was named after Johnstown, which was destroyed by a fire in 1825. It is located in the Susquehanna Valley region of western Pennsylvania and is bordered by the states of West Virginia and Ohio. The population of Erie as of the 2010 census was 27,955. The first permanent settlers in what is now Erie were families from Albany County, New York who arrived on October 15, 1792. They built homes along the banks of the Susquehanna River and started raising crops. The first school in what is now Erie was opened in 1795. The township was organized on November 3, 1800 under the name of Northumberland Township. On December 29th, 1794, Erie became a part of Pennsylvania when it seceded from New York State. Erie's economy depends largely upon agriculture and its location makes it an important agricultural center for western Pennsylvania. Some key industries include manufacturing (steel production), transportation (railroads), wholesale trade (commerce), information technology services (information technology companies) and real estate development/services (real estate agents).
Erie was incorporated as a borough on March 1, 1814. The population of Erie peaked at over 100,000 in 1910 and declined to under 50,000 by 1990. Today the borough has a population of approximately 25,000. The history of Erie can be traced back to frontier days when the area was occupied by the Lenape people. In 1682, the Susquehanna River ran through this area and offered passage for hunting parties from Pennsylvania into New York. The Iroquois also frequented the region, so trade relationships were important to both groups. In 1747, during the French and Indian War, General George Washington's forces destroyed Fort Duquesne in what is now downtown Erie. This event helped solidify British control over this part of Pennsylvania and contributed to some of the animosity between these two groups later on in the war. During the American Revolution (1775-83), much fighting took place here including skirmishes with British forces as well as battles against Native Americans such as Shawnee Indians who had been living in this area for centuries before that time. “The Revolutionary War changed everything." - Dr., Leonard Boudreau
