The namesake for Greensburg is George Washington and it takes its name from General James Mann's 1781 victory over the French at Yorktown. Greensburg was originally a frontier settlement, founded by Scotsmen in 1754 on land that had been purchased from Indian sympathizers. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century due to its location near two important transportation routes -the Susquehanna River and the Susquehanna Canal. In 1793, Greensburg was incorporated as a borough and became one of the original fifteen townships in Lehigh County. During World War II, Greensburg played an important role inthe war effort by housing troops and providing supplies to servicemen stationed overseas. The military airport located in town served as an airbase for bombers conducting raids against Germany and other Axis countries; it also provided access to local farmers for bombing attacks. After the war ended, many veterans returned home and began new lives in Greenberg Township; however, some continued living in Greensburg until their deaths or move away after retirement or change of residence within Lehigh Valley communities
