Greensburg is a small town in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. Greensburg was incorporated as a borough on January 1, 1878, and became a city on December 15, 1907. The name of the town comes from "Greene's Ferry" which crossed the Susquehanna River near present-day Greenville. The first permanent settler in Greensburg was George Greene who arrived in 1784 and erected a log cabin near what is now the corner of Market and Washington Streets. In 1827, John Witherspoon donated land to make way for what would become Greensburg Borough. The first building in Greensburg was the Gilbert House which stood on what is now Main Street between Northampton Avenue and 2nd Street. This home served as the borough hall until it burned down in 1868. In 1881, the United States Census reported that Greensburg had a population of 21,564. The population grew to 25,811 in 1920 and 32,906 in 1930. The city's growth slowed during the Great Depression but resumed during World War II as the war economy rose production and jobs in the industry. In 1960, Greensburg became a borough and then a city after being annexed by Pittsburgh.
