The Harrisburg Air National Guard is one of the largest air forces in the United States. It has a history dating back to World War I and was activated on December 12, 1917. The Harrisburg Air National Guard's first unit was an airplane squadron, which served in the Spanish-American War. The unit was redesignated as a bomber squadron on November 25, 1918. The Harrisburg Air National Guard participated in World War II as part of the United States Armed Forces. After the war, the Harrisburg Air National Guard became involved in Cold War activity. Inactivated on September 30, 1991. On October 1, 1993, reactivated as an airlift squadron with Boeing 727 aircraft and assigned to flylift cargo over Central Pennsylvania for military installations and other purposes. Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is a city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is the seat of Lackawanna County. The population was 138,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Harrisburg's history goes back to 1755 when it was founded as a small village by Scots-Irish settlers. In 1779, it became an incorporated town after being designated as a military garrison for Fort Duquesne on the Delaware River. As one of the United States' first large cities, Harrisburg played an important role in its development and has since been known for its political and economic prestige. The city has been called "the cultural center of East Pennsylvania" and "the mecca of American politics." The City of Harrisburg was named in honor of George Washington by General John Forbes while he was Commander in Chief at Fort Duquesne during the early 18th century. The original name for Harrisburg may have been French: Rochelle or Cinque Terre - five townships - which refers to what are now Northumberland, Berkshires, Mercer County, Westmoreland County and Allegheny County Proper (now Pittsburgh). At that time there were only four townships in this area: Northumberland Township (present day Cumberland Township), Berkshires Township (present day Lebanon Township), Mercer County (present day northwestern Pittsburgh), and Westmoreland County (present day eastern Monett Borough). A list compiled by William Davenport shows that on October 12th, 1779 James Logan attempted to lay out a town near where present-day Interstate 95 meets Wyoming Avenue near Scranton/Wilkes-Barre International Airport with the following description: "...a new settlement...of 600 souls... situated upon high ground between two rivers... bounded on three sides by high mountains... On one side ran a wide stream called Piscataqua; on another side Beaverdam Creek flowed into it." Logan's plan failed because so few people wanted to move to such an isolated location. However, because Philadelphia had become more populous and influential due to its growth as an American port along the Delaware River under British rule, Logan's concept caught on among some Philadelphia business elites who saw an opportunity to create something similar within their own city limits if they could get approval from local government officials. Accordingly, on November 15th1779 James Logan submitted his request for incorporation with a view toward becoming "a proper borough". This application resulted in passage by both houses of Congress but no action was taken until January 3rd1800 when President John Adams signed legislation creating what would eventually be Lackawanna County adjoining Washington Parish within newly created Washingtonshire Counties east thereof without providing any specific boundary lines between those counties or indeed between Washingtonshire Parish and any other parish therein! On February 14th 1800 John Marshall delivered his opinion as US Attorney General refusing incorporation applications from Bethlehem/*Quincey*/Erie/*Snyder*/Dauphin/Carlisle*/Fayette*/Montgomery/*Webster* against guidance from then Ulysses S Grant who had assumed office that same year mantle previously held by Morris Ketchum whose term expired December 31st 1801 Prior thereto I certify That I did not receive information from any source whatsoever authorizing me so to do And much less authorize my subordinates So To Do Within Our Jurisdiction.... With Respect To Your Application For Incorporation You Are hereby Refused admittance Without Cause .... This lackadaisical attitude towards incorporation may have been connected withPhiladelphia's growing wealth at that time thanks largely to its slave trade which generated millions of dollars each year although taxes paid were often lower than elsewhere in America dueits distance from major ports-. Eventually federal troops arrived in order quashing all attempts at incorporation including those made by Logan himself just prior to his death in 1800 having failed because most residents desired nothing more than independence from Philadelphia however this did not mean community loyalty went unbroken as many members later served locally elected officials or attained even greater heights within their respective fields such as Congressman John Fitzpatrick who rose up through service during World War II before becoming U.S Ambassador Extraordinary and PlenipotentiaryanaideeToChina
The USAF has a rich Air Force gift history. In 1947, the USAF created the Military Airlift Command (MACC) to provide airlift support for military and civilian operations worldwide. The Air Force was also one of the founding members of NATO in 1949. In 1952, MACC became responsible for all airlift within the United States. From then until 1990, when it was merged into the Department of Defense, MACC flew more than 2 million passengers and cargo across 45 countries. The USAF also made significant contributions to air defense as part of both American neutrality during World War II and postwar developments in missile technology. The USAF deployed Operation Highjump in 1956 to explore Antarctica; Operation Blue Jay in 1962 to escort Convair 880 bombers over Soviet airspace; and Operation Deepfreeze in 1978 to stop Iranian nuclear missiles from reaching America. Additionally, starting in 1976, flying operations were conducted from stationed C-141s on Okinawa Island as part ofOperation Northern Watch. This provided aerial coverage for Japan during key periods such as the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), Korean War (1950-1953), Indochina War (1959-1973), Gulf Crisis (1990s), and Persian Gulf Conflict (2003).
