Polk visited Harrisburg while he was campaigning for President of the United States and saw first hand how quickly it had grown since he last had been there as a lieutenant colonel in the Mexican–American War just two years earlier. Polk ordered his army to cross over into eastern York County so that they could besiege Lawrenceville – then one of PA’s largest towns – before crossing back overriver and attacking Mexico City from that side. When news reached him of this attack plan he changed his plans and ordered his army across into western York County instead which resulted in a decisive victory at Palo Alto against Mexican forces commanded by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had retreated south towards Monterrey following failed negotiations with Ulysses S Grant during the Battle of Churubusco Creek that year.
