The Harrisburg National Guard has been a part of the Pennsylvania militia since 1777. The unit was initially known as "Captain John's Rangers" and later changed its name to the "Harrisburg Regiment" in 1799. In 1814, the regiment was redesignated "The 1st Regiment of Northumberland Volunteers." After the creation of the United States in 1776, the regiment served in various posts throughout New York and Pennsylvania. On January 14, 1861, after Confederate troops sacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, Captain John Buchanan organized a volunteer force to protect Harrisburg. This force became known as The 1st Regiment of Northumberland Volunteers (HARrisburg Rifles). The regiment participated in three Battles of Gettysburg and fought at several other engagements during the Civil War. During Reconstruction following the end of the Civil War, many HARrisburg Rifles served in various military campaigns including suppression of Arapaho Wars and Puerto Rican Uprising. In 1881, when statehood was granted to Pennsylvania, certain provisions were made for organizing national guard units within the state government. One such provision called for establishment of a lieutenant colonel position within each regiment to be filled by appointment from among members elected by member companies or regiments. Accordingly, on July 10th, 1881, The 1st Regiment (Harrisburg Rifles) was re-established with Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Fenton appointed commanding officer. At this time also came into being additional battalion commands which would later become brigades: brigade #1 (1881-1882), brigade #2 (1882-1884), brigade #3 (1885-1887), brigade #4 (188 9 - 1890), brigade #5(189 0 - 1897). Following World War I and American entry into World War II there was an increase in calls for Army service due to global conflict; however only four HARrisbergs volunteered for service during World War II Following WWI there were few original volunteers left so Army recruiters looked elsewhere In 1946 all old Regular Army detachments were disbanded with most soldiers being sent overseas In 1949 Harrsrg Guardsmen reactivated through local recruiting efforts
