Hermitage is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh– Allegheny–Youngstown, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Nicholas Niles and others in 1755 as a small trading post on the Susquehanna River. In 1814, Hermitage became an incorporated town with a government based on local consuls. In 1892, the town moved from its original location on Susquehanna Township to what is now Hermitage Township. In 1915-1916, General Electric constructed two power plants on top of the former estate of John Drexel II in Hermitage Township for use in developing electric industry in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The plant was demolished after just eight years due to high costs and environmental problems encountered during construction. The Hermitage Historic District contains over 100 buildings dating back to 1800 including many contributing properties from both townships that were merged into Butler County in 1898: Susquehanna Township (now part of Monroeville), Lower Providence Township (now part of North Hickory), Upper Providence Township (now part of Butler), and Easton Borough (now known as Lawrenceville).

The Hermitage was a Benedictine monastery in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, United States. It is now a National Historic Landmark. The monastery was founded in 1740 by the Reverend John Studley and his wife, Catherine Carbaugh. The first building was constructed on the site of what is now the convent’s garage. In 1748, Rev. John Studley moved the monastery to its present location on Enhinton Road near Beaver Falls. The Hermitage has been home to many famous people, including President George Washington and General James Wilson. President Washington worked at the hermitage for more than two years from 1785–87 while he served as Master of Robes at Westminster Abbey in London. General James Wilson also worked at the hermitage from 1814 until his death in 1827.
