In 1855, Italian engineers arrived in Java and founded the first commercial plantation at Kediri (now Yogyakarta). They began importing Arabic coffees from Arabia and Africa and roasting them at their own site. This new technique proved successful, and Italian settlers imported more Arabians to start their own plantations around this time. Coffee became increasingly popular throughout Europe as transportation methods improved; by 1875, it had reached America."

Johnstown was a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, until the 1800s. It was situated on the Susquehanna River, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Pittsburgh and 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of Youngstown. The town was founded by John Smeaton in 1795. By 1825, it had a population of 350 people. Johnstown ceased to be an independent community after being annexed by Pittsburgh in 1827. The town is now known as Johnstown United Methodist Church and the John Smeaton House Museum.
