Johnstown is a small town located in the state of Pennsylvania, about 25 miles southwest of Pittsburgh. It is the only municipality in Johnstown Township and the only full-time U.S. city within its boundaries. Population was 5,811 as of 2017[2] and it is home to two universities: The University of Pittsburgh and Gettysburg College. Coffee first began to be grown in Johnstown by American farmers in the early 1800s. In 1825, Nicholas Batchelor started growing coffee beans on his farm at what is now known as Main Street and Third Avenue in Johnstown. By 1830, coffee had become an important part of local economy and was being sold at stores throughout the region. In 1836, Abraham Lincoln became president of America and developed a taste for coffee that would later be associated with him. He frequented local cafes where he would drink espresso or macchiato with friends before taking his meals in nearby Allegheny County restaurants.[3] Coffee became an important part of his political career and he helped start three branches of the United States government – one each for Washington D.C., New York City, and Illinois – with their own cafés.[4] In 1865, when Andrew Carnegie built his steel mill near Johnstown,[5][6] coffee became an important export commodity for Carnegie’s company. For years afterwards, coffee was considered one of Carnegie’s most successful businesses ventures; between 1860-1920 his Steel Empire exported over 1 million metric tons (MT) worth of coffee to different countries worldwide[7][8]. Coffee production increased rapidly during this time thanks to technological advances such as percolator machines,[9] but World War II halted further development due to cost overruns.[10][11] However, restoration efforts following World War II have now resumedand steady growth has been seen since 2002[12]. Today, coffee remains an important part of Johnstown’s economy with many businesses reliant on it including grocery stores (predominantly Polish), cafes/restaurants (of which there are more than 20), health food stores (including a Starbucks), post offices (which also serve up java), breweries (including several popular microbreweries nestled amongst antique shops neighbouring downtown), vehicle parts manufacturing,[13], agricultural products processing[14], oil refineries,[15], [16][17][18], water filtration plants [19],[20],[21],[22]), manufacturing services[23],[24], real estate development,[25]; retail sales activity has also begun arising from new bars opening up along Third Avenue corridor adjacent to old mills dating back to the early 19th century; some former mills have been converted into residential properties while others are still used commercially as warehouses or educational institutions
