Johnstown is a town in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,291 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnstown-Canton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name originates from Johnstone Creek. The first Europeans to visit the area were traders and missionaries in the early 17th century. In 1785, General George Washington's army camped near Johnstown after crossing the Susquehanna River on its way to battle with British forces in Philadelphia. A group of settlers led by David Wilson settled at what is now called Westover Heights in 1787 and named their new community for General Washington's headquarters west of Pittsburgh. In 1814, a devastating fire destroyed most of Johnstown and most of Carnegie Mellon University; however, thankful for help from friends and volunteers from across Canada, Carnegie Mellon rebuilt campus within one year. In 1865, when President Abraham Lincoln visited Johnstown to survey Union lines before his April 12 speech at Western Union Station (now Conshohocken), he stopped at Westover Heights for dinner with his family before continuing on to Lebanon Junction where he delivered his Gettysburg Address. During World War II many people worked at local munitions factories such as Bethlehem Steel or U-S Steel which produced weapons needed by both sides in conflict including the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki; some residents still live near these factories today as nearby homes are built largely above ground around blast streets made fresh by explosions during wartime production processes. In 1827, Johnstown became a city and received its charter from Pennsylvania Governor George Washington; it remained an incorporated city until 1907. By 1890, however, the population of Johnstown had shrunk to about 100 residents and it reverted back to an unincorporated community until 1987 when it became a borough. Today, Johntown is a small town with a population of about 350 residents that relies heavily on agriculture for its economy; some of the most notable crops include corn, soybeans, wheat and potatoes.
