After Confederation, much of what are now Kingston and Scranton were included in Allegheny County. However, for many years both areas lay within Licking County until they were annexed to Lackawanna County in 1907. The history of agriculture dates back to pioneer times when farms dotted the landscape around present-day Kingston. The first crops grown here were rice and corn; after World War II came wheat and other crops such as soybeans and cotton. Today large parts of town are filled with large factories employing locals as well as retirees from surrounding communities like Steel City (to the east) and Scranton (to the west). The lack of any natural resources has led to various businesses struggling over recent years: clothing companies have closed their doors; restaurants have closed down; art galleries have gone out of business; while banks have lost customer demand for loans among other things The economy has started to improve recently though with new construction starting up including a hospital complex just outside town limits which will add jobs throughout its redevelopment process
