The Marine Corps has a rich and storied history in Lancaster, Pa. The city was named after General James K. Polk, who served as the first U.S. President to be impeached, and the Marines were founded there in 1855. It is also where the first marines fought in the Mexican-American War in 1846. Over time, Lancaster became a center for marine activity with barracks and training facilities built there as well as a branch of the navy that conducted operations out of Marine Barracks on Market Street until 1918. In 2006, Marines Memorial Plaza opened at 4th and Market Streets in downtown Lancaster to commemorate these years of Marine activity and commemoration. Today, it is home to a library, art gallery, restaurant and movie theater all managed by the Naval Reserve Command detachment that operates them. In addition to its functions as an important tourist attraction for locals and visitors alike, Memorial Plaza also serves as an important historical resource for students studying Marine Corps history at local colleges or universities across Pennsylvania including Central State University (Lancaster), La Salle College (Philadelphia), Temple University (Philadelphia) and US Coast Guard Academy (Newport News).

Lancaster, Pennsylvania is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Lancaster has been a manufacturing center since the early 19th century and now enjoys a resurgence as an agricultural center with significant production of flowers and vegetables. Lancaster was founded by Captain John Forbes in 1795 on land that he had bought from the Delaware Indians. In 1800, Forbes built the first mill in what is now Lancaster County. The flour made from wheat grown in adjoining Bedford County was so successful that Forbes decided to build a second mill on his own lands in 1802. By 1830, Lancaster had five mills and over 100 residents. In 1881, when Penn Central Railroad first reached Lancaster, it connected with Pittsburgh and soon became one of the largest railroads in America. One of Penn Central's most famous locomotives, "Big Boy", originated here at one of its many workshops before being acquired by TV networks ABC and CBS for use on their new shows "The rear Window" and "Nanking". In 1912-13 American Tobacco Company constructed three tobacco factories: one near downtown Lancaster (now known as Brownfield), another on North Main Street (now part of University Park) east of Millbrook Road (now called Lincoln Highway), and another near Bellefonte (now known as Olde Hickory Rd.). The Three Rivers Paper Company also operated out of these facilities during this time period; their products included paper for advertisements, tickets to theater or baseball games, postcards and other paper products. After World War II saw an increase in cigarettes sales throughout America due to Prohibitionism – which effectively ended smoking – American Tobacco Company closed its plants around 1951-1952; all but one building still stands today - that plant being used currently for apartments development purposes! Today’s economy within Lancastria depends primarily upon agriculture although there is some light industry including furniture manufacturing followed by services such as IT services/administration/telecommunications etc., along with retail stores selling local food items like fresh produce or meat while also serving up international cuisine options like Chinese Takeout or Italian Pizza USA! The area that is now Lancaster was first settled by German immigrants in the early 1800s. In 1874, Lancaster became the county seat of Franklin County. Over time, other towns and villages were established around Lancaster including Reading, Abington Heights, and Easton. At its peak as a manufacturing center in the 1940s and 1950s it had a population of over 100,000 people. However, with more recently increased competition from larger cities such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh lessened demand for manufacturers jobs in Lancaster there has been a decline in industry throughout the decades.Today, Lancaster remains a mostly agricultural community with many businesses providing services like banking or health care to surrounding areas. The town features several sizable historical landmarks including Andrew Johnson's Presidential Library and Museum which was built between 1924-1927 following his election as President of the United States; Parson's School House which is also used as an office building; Dickinson College;and John Lennon's home Node 4 Bungalow which overlooks Lennox Hill Park (now part of University Park).
