Lansdowne was founded in 1784 by James Lansdale and his brothers-in-law Joseph Haines and John Alexander. It was named for Lord Lansdowne, who had purchased the land from the Haines family in 1772. The first post office in Lansdowne was established on November 3, 1784, and operated until 1810. In 1811, it became the seat of government for York County under the administration of Governor George Washington. After York County split into two parts in 1813, Lansdowne remained part of York County until it was merged into new Cumberland County in 1815. Lansdowne is located at (40.827694,-76.004665). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.92%, is water.. Lansdowne was founded in 1793 by the Lansdownes, a landowning family. The name is derived from the Linganook River, which flows through the town. The first settler in Lansdowne was John Lansdowne, who came to the area in 1793. By 1800, there were twelve families living in and around Lansdowne. In 1814, the town received its charter from Pennsylvania General Assembly. In 1828, Lansdowne became a part of Huntingdon County. From 1830 to 1850, it was part of Carbon County. By 1860, there were over two hundred people living in and around Lansdowne. In 1868-1869, Lansdownsie saw its first harvest of crops; this marked an important milestone for the community because it helped to support many local businesses during that time period. In 1870-1871, some new homes were built on Main Street in Lansdownsie – these additions helped increase population numbers even further during this time period. The popularity of farming and other agricultural activities led to more businesses opening up throughout Lansdownsie during this time period as well – these include grocery stores (the first being opened up by Mr. Quinn), breweries (the first being opened up by White Horse Brewing Company) and taverns (the first being opened up by The Lion’s Head Tavern). In 1898-1901, a large dam was constructed near present day University Park Boulevard in order to help with water availability for surrounding farms/villages as well as for industrial purposes downstream; however, due to flooding after heavy rains earlier that year & subsequent repairs/removal of debris caused extensive damage to both property & infrastructure within several days), much of what had been built at that point wasn’t restored until quite some time later! This particular event also served as a catalyst for developing nearby University Park into one of PA’s leading research and development hubologies over ensuing decades! As mentioned before: due various 20th century updates/improvements including restoration work on main thoroughfares between University Park Boulevard & Upper Stroudsburg Road following floods which took place back then (& still take place every few years or so), most everything now extant within 'Old' Lansdownsie - barring any major damage - has come about via such initiatives!
