Oil City, Pennsylvania is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 11,515 at the 2010 census. Oil City is home to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and other military installations. It also has an extensive industrial base that includes heavy manufacturing of aluminum and other metals. The town was founded by Polish immigrants in 1876 as a small community called "Nowy Sącz". The first American forces to enter World War I landed in Erie on December 15, 1914. They were the 3rd Aero Squadron from Fort Worth Municipal Airport which flew Curtiss JN-4D3 fighter planes for the US Army's Balloon Corps under the command of Colonel John Leland Wiley. On November 17th 1915 during World War I Other aircraft from Fort Worth Municipal Airport took part in aerial combat over Germany against Austro-Hungarian Empire Army Aviation Units with machine guns and pistols! Oil City was named after an early settler named John Duryea who arrived in 1876. In 1907 oil companies established pipelines through Nowy Sącz to create two new townships: Parkland Township and Shelltown Township (today's Oil City). This increase in population led to development of oil industry businesses such as Cook Refinery Company (founded 1901) which still exists today as a general business concern; Pioneer Mining Company (1905), Keystone Pipe Line Co., Inc.(1908), Bethlehem Steel Corporation(1900), Western Electric Manufacturing Co.(1895) and many others throughout the years up until its closure in 1976 due to economic decline within Steelville region around it. During World War II much production activity took place at Wright-Patterson AFB where Boeing bombers were built before being sent into combat RAF squadrons across Europe. By 1865, they had organized themselves into a company and started trading goods with traders along the Susquehanna River. In 1870, they built their first store at what is now Fourth Street and Main Avenue. From this point forward, they served as one of the primary sources of commerce for much of north-central PA until production shifted to southern Pennsylvania in the 1920s._ In 1892, Oil City became an upstream oil refinery town when Philadelphia chemical giant Shell opened its plant there._ During World War II, Shippington Ammunition Plant No 2 (SAP) was established adjacent to Oil City thanks to government contracts awarded through Wartime Production Sharing Agreement (WPSA). In 2012, the USAF provided 9 AH-64 Apache helicopters to Iraqi Army in order to provide them with support during Operation Neptune’s Spear. This donation increased military activity on both sides of the conflict in Iraq
