When the United States Air Force was founded in 1947, it had only two wings. The first wing was activated on September 15, 1947 and the second wing was activated on November 1, 1947. The Air Force's first commander, General James M. Gavin, called for a "ghost" USAF wing to help keep airfields open during World War II when many of America's fighter aircraft were destroyed or diverted to war with Japan. On January 6th, 1949, General George C. Marshall created the Strategic Air Command (SAC) and announced that all USAF fighter planes would be transferred to SAC under one command. This move made Wyomissing Airport the new home of SAC's first operational wing which became known as "The Eighth". When SAC was disbanded in 1969 its assets were merged into Tactical Air Command which is now known as NORAD. Air Force gifts have been a part of Wyomissing history since it became an airport. In 1954, the United States Postal Service donated four post office BOXES each filled with $10 American currency so that citizens could buy stamps at local post offices to sent mail to their military posts around the world while also supporting USAF missions in Europe during World War II and Korea. More recently in 1984, the Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences gave Wyomissing Airport its first gift - a used Boeing 727 airliner which served as both an official transport for Academy members and cargo for scientific experiments at the airport over 30 years!

The first European settlers in what is now Wyomissing were Germans who arrived in 1797 from Alsace-Lorraine. The town was named for John Wyomissing, an early settler and one of two men chosen by George Washington to survey and map the Susquehanna River valley for a new national capital. Wyomissing was founded on April 10, 1800, by three men from Lancaster County: Samuel Butler, Elijah Clarke and David Foystall. In 1827, Andrew Mellon donated land to the town for use as a Cemetery; it still contains remains of many early settlers. In 1849–1850, Arthur Ashe played his first professional golf tournament at nearby Monaghanville Golf Course; this event helped trigger development of nearby Parkland as one of America's most important golf communities. In 1881–1882, work began on creating Mount Rushmore National Monument which would become one of America's largest tourist attractions; today's monument includes more than twenty peaks including Mount Rushmore itself! Wyomissing is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,724 at the 2010 census. Wyomissing was established by Germans in 1797. It became a borough on December 12, 1907. The borough was re-established as a town on November 3, 1912.
Wyomissing was founded in 1795 by Jacob Wyomissing and his wife, Rachel. The town was named for the Delaware River which flows through it. In 1853, the town became the seat of government for Wyomissing County when it was created from part of Blair County. On May 20, 1855, the first election to be held in what is now Pennsylvania took place in Wyomissing after voters approved a new constitution. The town's population also increased rapidly due to immigration from eastern Europe during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The name "Wyoming" came about because of its location on a bend in the Delaware River that allowed trade goods and passengers passage between Philadelphia and Wilmington ( Delaware). In 1865, all but one building in Wichita Township were destroyed by fire; this one still stands today as a creamery. A new courthouse was erected at that time and named for Judge John Brougham who had represented Wyoming County on the bench since 1849. On December 3, 1903, an earthquake struck western Pennsylvania killing more than 100 people including many residents of Erie County who were living near Pittsburgh before that city's incorporation into Pennsylvania three years earlier.
