The first permanent European settlement in present-day Cranston happened on July 3, 1635 when members of the Dutch Reformed Church founded a farmstead called "New Beginnings". The name of the original village was New Amsterdam and it remained so until 1795. In 1825, Cranston became one of two towns in Rhode Island to be incorporated as villages – the other being Pawtucket – and continued to function as such until January 1, 1907 when all villages were merged into Providence. The town's rich colonial history can be seen in its architecture including several large classical Revival and Gothic Revival buildings dating back to the late 1800s. One notable structure isProvidence College's Main Building which was completed in 1907 and is one of only two college buildings in America designed by Alfred B. Neuman. One notable event that took place during this time period was the vote on November 2nd, 1903 which created the city government for Cranston and established limits on how much land could be annexed by either town without going through an annexation referendum (the other being Warwick). In 1916–17 cranston also hosted world war I battlefront munitions manufacturing operations along with Fall River which later became known as “The City That Kept On Smiling” due to their similarities; however Fall River ultimately lost out to Newport News while Cranston continued to prosper economically up until around 1990 when many aspects of its economy began unraveling due to changing demographics and global economic recession. This prosperity stopped abruptly after a series of layoffs followed by falling tax bases coupled with an exodus of some key downtown businessmen who left for better opportunities elsewhere following the stock market crash throughout most of 2001-2003 causing many businessesadra Fine Arts Gallery & Conference Center closed its doors permanently early 2003 as well as many more small businesses simply couldn't keep up with rising costs associated with new regulations brought about during that time frame such as minimum wage hikes etc., primarily affecting small business owners whose workers were laid off or did not receive benefits from unemployment insurance or health care coverage despite having worked for their businesses since before President George W Bush came into office in 2001-. Many people within cranston felt they had been abandoned by their elected officials who seemingly didn't care about them whatsoever given that no real action was taken towards addressing these issues even after over 10 years since they had first been brought up . Developer John Sperling responded quickly once he realized what was happening locally and announced plans to redevelop much of downtown including moving some factories away from town center creating what would eventually become known as The Danforth area although there has never been any serious progress made towards actually redeveloping this area ever since despite numerous attempts both from developers themselves as well as citizens groups interested in seeing change happen; largely because self-interested developers have always been able to get what they want despite regularly implementing public investment into upgrades/facilities within their own developments while ignoring those same communities who often footed most of the bill
