The Bluffton Air Force Base gift history can be traced back to World War II. The base was first established in 1941 as the Bluffton Army Air Field. It became an air forcebase in 1942 and was renamed after General James M. Gavin, Jr., who served as the Chief of Staff of the United States Military Forces during World War II. In 1946, the air forcebase became part of the newly formed South Carolina National Guard and was renamed Bluffton Air National Guard Base. The present-day Bluffton AFB is located on South Carolina's Eastern coast, about 30 miles south of Charleston.
Bluffton is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,418 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around Bluffton was first settled by Africans in the early 1800s as part of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Afterward, white farmers and mill owners developed this land into a farming community with a humid climate and extensive forestation. In 1865, Confederate General Pemberton's army passed through this area on their way to join General Robert E. Lee in Petersburg. As part of that general's retreat, many Confederate soldiers were killed or captured here while trying to cross over the mountains into Union territory. After the war ended, new development occurred in Bluffton with white families coming to take advantage of its fertile ground and easy access to markets. By 1960, Bluffton had reached its current size with 1,500 residents and 271 businesses employing more than 1,200 workers. Today, Bluffton remains an important agricultural center for Spartanburg County with crops such as corn (maize), cotton (grape), soybeans, potatoes and sweet potatoes being produced; it also has some light industry including a poultry farm and two restaurants/cafés

Bluffton is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1824 by Colonel John C. Bluff and his wife Catherine Bluff. The town became a city in 1907 and remains that way today. The first permanent white settlers in what is now Bluffton were two families from Georgia: the Woodfields and the Kingsburys. Colonel John C. Bluff arrived in 1824 with his family to found what would become known as "Bluffton." He had been sent there by General Andrew Jackson to survey land for a new army base on which he could build Fort Sumter after the War of 1812 (see also Charleston). The town's early years were quite rough; during its infancy, it was swampy and too deep to Ford loaded wagons over because no one had any boats or carts to carry goods across. However, these difficulties soon passed away as people began moving into the area, setting up homes and businesses along Rogers Creek (later renamed Broad River). In 1827, Captain James Fenton led an expedition through present-day Spartanburg County searching for a route inland to join up with General Andrew Jackson's forces besieging Fort Moultrie on Hilton Head Island (now Savannah). After spending several days traveling through difficult country near present-day Clemson University (), they discovered Rogers Creek valley and decided to settle there permanently. Today's downtown business district – including historic residences such as Governor Gadsden House – evolved out of this initial growth phase. In 1907, when Charleston became an official city within the state of South Carolina, Blufthampton became its second city councilmember (). Today it remains the most populous municipality within Spartanburg County without incorporated status! An interesting aspect of our town’s history is that both Mayor Royce Moffatt and Councilmember Donnie Brown are direct descendants of Colonel John C. Bluffs youngest son James Moffatt who died at age 21 while serving in Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846–1848). James Moffatt’s younger brother David Browning took over leadership of our community hall when Mayor Royce left office following his election victory in November 2009…..In short we have some pretty good bloodlines going on here!
