Cayce is a town in York County, South Carolina, United States. It is the namesake of Cayce University and the home of the Cayce Research Institute. The population was 9,719 as of the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1853 by Dr. George Washington Bailey and his wife Phebe Snodgrass Bailey. It became an incorporated municipality on March 1, 1907. The name originated from General Joseph Easley's observation that "The most-cited place in South Carolina was called 'Cayece'" and because "There are few places more picturesque than these mountain ranges running down to the ocean." Cayce had a post office from 1857 until it closed in 1903. The first settler in Cayce was John Wesley Hardin who prospected for coal near what is now its downtown area in 1859. In 1860, Wm Hargrave built a cabin on what is now Main Street; this became the first white house in Cayce when he changed his name to Hargrave & Company early that year after selling land to them for $1 per acre (the price at which land could be sold). By 1870, about 25 families lived there with four blacksmiths and six farmers living off hunting and fishing opportunities nearby. Eventually growth led to development around Main Street with several stores, schools, churches and other businesses joining forces to form a small town center at what would later become downtown Cayzeiinga (later renamed Bay City). During World War II much of downtownBay City was destroyed by American troops while they were fighting against Japan but many important buildings survive including Bay City Hall which still stands today as one of the oldest municipal buildings west of Interstate 20. After World War II passenger service ended along I-20 so commercial development began with automobiles becoming popular here during the 1950s leading to new names like "TheVillage" or "Bay City". However some old timers remember when things started going wrong with cars here such as no streetlights or no sewer system until 1958 when someone came up with the idea of having Cahice Electric Light Company install power tools/lighting on every streetlight leading up into downtown during night times thus saving energy costs for everyone involved! Cayce is a small town in the state of South Carolina. It is located in Orangeburg County, and it has a population of about 1,200 people. Cayce was founded in 1820 by John S. Cayce and his family. The Cayces were Methodists, and they built the first church in Cayce. In 1831, they moved to their current location on Church Street. The Cayces were involved in many important events in their community, including serving as directors of the local bank and being elected officials. They also helped to start the first school in Cayce and help to build the first courthouse here. The town was renamed after Confederate General Pee Dee Coleman during World War II. Coleman was known for his role in helping to lead the Confederate forces against Union forces at Battleof Meredith Plantation near here on November 9, 1862. After the war, Coleman served as mayor of Cayce from 1865-1867 and again from 1870-1872. He died here at age 71 years old on July 6, 1918.

In that year, the local bank collapsed and Cayce had to borrow money from elsewhere to keep the town afloat. It slowly lost its economic importance during the Depression years but regained some of its former prosperity in the early 1940s when it became a railyard for transportation products.
