Fort Mill is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Fort Mill University and the headquarters for the South Carolina National Guard. The first settlers in what is now Fort Mill were two families from North Carolina who arrived in 1795. They named their land "Fort Hill" after Major General William Howe's victory over George Washington at Yorktown that year. The fortification of this hill by British artillery during the American Revolutionary War helped protect Fort Mill from being captured by forces loyal to King George III and his wife, Queen Charlotte of England. In 1814, Union General Anthony Wayne landed at Fort Mill with an army commanded by Brigadier General James Longstreet to attack Confederate General Thomas Pickens' army near Ninety-Six Mile Bridge; however, Longstreet was repulsed and returned to Union lines at Cross Creek on July 24, 1814. In 1860, when all of Richland County was absorbed into South Carolina, Fort Mills residents voted to create a new town named for themselves – "Fort Mill". The first post office opened in 1865; it was renamed "Fort Mill" again in 1887 when it became part of the newly createdRichland County government. From its inception until 1954, Fort Mills functioned as an unincorporated community within Richland County without any form of local government or school district (the only exception being brief periods during World War II when Ft Mills served as a military camp). At that time, both Richland County and Columbia County were formed from portions of South Carolina which had been lost to Georgia following the Civil War—a process known as redrawing of state boundaries. On February 5th 1934, a group including seven citizens from Ft Mill organized what would become the first school board inSouth Carolina; they called themselves the School District No 2A Board because they wanted control over all aspects of education for their students inside and outside of their own townspeople's homes (and also because there were no other schools available within Richardsburg limits). That same year saw also another important event: Fort Mills became home base for United States Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point where America's first jet fighters were developed during World War II using resources brought over by Army airfields located nearby such as Greenwood Airport and Clemson Field (now Clemson University Airport). From its inception until disbanding due to lackadaisical leadership on the part of some trustees early in its history – including one whose son later became Mayor of Ft MILL – Ft MILL School District No 2A played an important role in setting up our present day educational system here at FortMillUniversity…It has always been our dreamto provide quality education opportunities not just for our children but also adults across our Community who may have never otherwise had access to quality learning environments before today."
