In 1937, a small lighthouse was donated to the Coast Guard by Mrs. John E. Hitchcock and it was used as a station Headquarters until 1951 when it became the Coast Guard Museum. In 1951, a new station building was built on land donated by Mrs. Sidney Lunsford and it served as the Headquarters for the present day Coast Guard Station in Greenville until 1986 when it became part of the U S Coast Guard Academy complex which is now known as Moria Campus. Since 1987, gifts have been coming from all over America in an annual tradition known as "Operation Christmas." This year's Operation Christmas was held on December 6th and 7th with contributions totaling $1 million dollars.
Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, located on the Ashley River. The population was 34,844 at the 2010 census[2]. It is part of the Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Greenville were Frenchmen and their Indian allies who arrived in 1670 and named it La Ville Rose (the City of Roses). In 1729, Colonel John Smith founded Mount Pleasant Plantation on what is now known as Robinson's Hillock Road east of the Ashley River. By 1740, Smith had acquired over 2,000 acres (800 km²) of land including present-day Greenville proper. At that time, Greenville consisted of only a few miles (1 km) wide strip along the river banks between Mount Pleasant and Smith's plantation houses near downtown. In 1807, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Knox County to Greenville during his campaign for governor of Alabama. He assigned Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Hawkins to build him a house on Plantation Pointe – today's Hawkins House Museum – which became his Headquarters until he resigned in 1809 due to illness then returned home to take command of Mobile Bay Forces during the War of 1812. For most of its early history as an African American town or village, Greensboro was called "New Market". After whites began moving into town from outlying plantations begins late 1850s through 1860s when spacious new homes were built by white cotton planters as part of Planter's Assistant System program,[3] New Market was officially renamed Greensboro on October 10th 1865 with incorporation complete following a special election held November 3rd that year pursuant to state law designed to effect racial balance in local government.[4]:p5 Many black residents took up arms against Confederate forces during 1861–1865 because they felt disenfranchised within white society while others volunteered for military service; however many black men did not return home after Union victory and all but one post office closed by 1865[5]:p7 Blacks made up less than 20% (~1300 total) population at end Of Civil War
