The United States Air Force has a long history of providing gifts to individuals and organizations. The USAF’s History Section is responsible for researching, compiling and maintaining the AFB’s gift history. Air Force personnel have been giving back to society throughout its history. The first military police organization in the USAF was activated on March 17, 1947 when one squadron of F-86Fs was sent to Air University at Maxwell Field, Alabama as part of the Security Forces Unit. In 1950, two squadrons were assigned to RAF Fairford in England as the Royal Air Force Police Squadron (No 309). On July 1, 1951 two squadrons were reassigned from RAF Fairford to USAAF Mather AFB, California as the USAF Tactical Intelligence Agency Squadron (No 237). In 1952 a detachment of A-6D Intruder pilots flew into Japan for three months Operation Ikari II during which time they provided intelligence support for American forces fighting in Korea. From 1951 through 1953 over 2,500 AF personnel gave their time and services to support ground forces in various ways including airlift operations and escort duty with fighter aircraft. On September 18th 1954 Headquarters USAF activated an aviation unit under Wing Commander “Pete” Landon called the Aerospace Defense Command (ADCOM) with headquarters located at Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton Ohio untilactivated on October 15th 1959 when ADC moved from Wright-Patterson AFB to Elmendorf AFB Alaska where it remains today as part of 4th Weather Wing/9th Special Operations Wing (Special Operations Group) Colonel Leroy Eaker became Director of Aeronautics at Wright-Patterson AFB after being relieved by General Curtis LeMay on November 30 th , 1948. He had served as Deputy Director since June 1946 upon appointment by General LeMay who had assumed command of Eighth Army just prior to his retirement effective December 15 th . With this change in leadership came an increased emphasis on aeronautical research that would culminate with Project Blue Jay which focused upon developing large bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons into Cuba while also conducting overflights over Soviet airspace using Convair 680's & P-51 Mustang's

The town has also been home to several colleges including Morehouse College and Western Carolina University.
