Greer is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. Greer is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1830, John Sargent bought land east of present-day Greer and built his home there. He later married Anna Haley, who had also come to Spartanburg County from North Carolina. They raised two children: Jesse and Elizabeth Sargent (1833-1911). Anna died in 1847 and John moved to Illinois where he died in 1865. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Easley led an attack against Union forces near what is now Greer while serving as commander of the 1st South Carolina Brigade under Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant. The attack failed but resulted in many casualties for both sides. After the war ended, most of the original white settlers left or were forced out by African American residents who had been born and raised here since before secession began; black people continued to live here until after World War II when they were forcibly integrated into local government institutions such as schools and businesses through various measures such as busing and integration ordinances passed by local governments throughout south Florida during that time period
