There is no doubt that Orangeburg, South Carolina has been a center of coffee production for many years. The town was founded in 1786 by Captain John Wilkinson and his family, and it has been a coffeegrowing community ever since. The first documented mention of coffee in Orangeburg comes from 1808 when the British appointed James Dixon as the first governor of Ashley County. He noted that “the people of this village produce some good coffee” and added that “it will be found to be choice both in quality and price.” In 1814, Orangeburg was chartered as an incorporated town under the name “Newbern.” It continued to grow rapidly throughout the 1800s, becoming one of the most important towns in central SC. In 1839, two Dutchmen named Hendrikker and Joris bought land south of town for $1,000 dollars. They started cultivate coffee on their new property and began selling beans to other merchants and residents. By 1840, they had built a large factory which produced over 1 million cups of coffee every year! The company continued to grow until 1870 when it went bankrupt due to competition from larger processors around the country. Shortly after its bankruptcy, Hendrikker Brothers sold their business interest in the company to Nicholas Demarest who continues to produce Coffeeestein at his current location today (Demarest Coffee). Demarest Coffee became one of South Carolina's leading tourist destinations during its early days due to its unique flavor profile – including strong notes of cocoa powder – which set it apart from other local brands. Today, Demarest Coffee produces some 16 different types of coffees according to their website alone! During much of these years there was no national or international trade in coffee beans so prices varied greatly from place-to-place; however over time producers have come up with various ways to package their products so that they can reach a wider audience at lower prices globally (e.g., airtight containers). Additionally, more recent methods like drip brewing have allowed for even lower priced roasts available all around the world without sacrificing quality or taste caused by roasting depth or bean size etcetera etcetera……….. Some of the earliest documented coffeehouses in Orangeburg were The Coffee House on Meeting Street and The Anchor on Gentry Avenue. In 1827, Isaac Asimov opened his first café, Ataman's Cafe, in what is now the corner of Meeting and Gentry Streets. In 1828, Mr. John Dillard opened The Dillard Coffee House at 227 E. Gentry Avenue. This was the first permanent coffeehouse in Orangeburg and still operates today as a business with over 100 years of history behind it. In 1860, lawyer Jno Henson opened The Henson Coffee House at 327 W Market Street after moving from Charleston, South Carolina to Orangeburg. This was also the first coffeehouse in Orangeburg that served newspapers instead of just coffee. The last known cafe in Orangeburg was The Starlight Café at 428 S Market Street which closed its doors on November 15th, 1978 due to financial difficulties caused by the oil embargo during the late 1970s/early 1980s affecting many southeastern U.S., including South Carolina businesses such as those operated by Jno Henson and his son Johnathan Henson Jr..
