Huron is a small town in South Dakota, United States. The population was 593 at the 2000 census. It is part of Sioux Falls, the most populous city in South Dakota and the state's largest city by population. The first people to live in Huron were the Oglala Sioux. They arrived in 1851 from Minnesota and built a cabin on what is now Huron Boulevard. This location became known as "The Logging Settlement." In 1863, the Sioux Indian Agency was established here and functioned until 1907 when it was merged into the Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs. In 1912, all Sioux Indians living on or near Big Horn Island were transferred to this new agency along with their families. In 1922, a post office called Huron was established at what is now North Main Street. The name changed to "South Dakota" in 1934 when it became a U.S.-Mexico border town during World War II as part of Operation Crossroads (the relocation of over 40,000 American citizens from Mexico). In 1951, an agricultural experiment station was established at what is now Huron High School; it operated for many years before being closed down in 1985 due to budget cuts within USDA's Johnson County Agricultural Experiment Station program. Huron has experienced growth throughout its history; however, it has also faced challenges such as increased traffic congestion and noise pollution from local agriculture operations which have caused some residents to leave for greener pastures elsewhere in South Dakota or even out of state altogether. Despite these challenges, however, Huron remains one of the poorest towns in South Dakota with median household income only $27 per week according to 2005 US Census data.
