The Mitchell Army Post Office was established in 1881 and has been serving the community of Mitchell since that time. The post office is currently located on US 191 east of the town. From its inception, the MitchellArmy Post Office served as a key artery for soldiers and their families returning to the community after deployments abroad. over the years, military gifts have become an integral part of the Postal Service’s culture here inMitchell. The Mitchell Regiment was organized on December 12, 1862 in South Dakota. The regiment was composed of men from the counties of Sioux City, Kearney, and Morton. On January 1, 1863 the regiment left South Dakota for Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina to participate in the Confederate Civil War. The regiment arrived at Fort Sumter on January 9th and was attached to the First Brigade, Eighth Infantry Division under Major General
Mitchell, South Dakota is a town in Pierre County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Mitchell is the largest community in Pierre County and it is also home to Mount Rushmore National Monument. The townsite of Mitchell was platted in 1882 by commissioners of Indian Territory who were travelling through that area on their way to visit other areas. The name "Mitchell" comes from one of the original members of the commission,Judge George Mitchell. In 1905, when Sioux Indians raided Crooked River Ranch near Mitchell and destroyed many stock pens and equipment; General Alfred Terry ordered all Indian nationals living west of Bismarck to leave that area immediately or face martial law. As a result of this order, many people in southeastern South Dakota relocated to Mitchell during that time period as well as some who had already left eastern South Dakota for good because they could not live under military jurisdiction anymore. In 1910-11 local farmers started growing hay crops on land adjacent to the current town site which became known as "Haystack Hill."After years of experimentation with different types and dosages of fertilizers and herbicides used on these early hay crops, farmers got results they liked so much they decided to keep using them even though no government subsidies ever came available for such an activity back then! This successful experiment led to today's excessive use of chemical fertilizer by most farm owners throughout America which has caused significant problems for both our planet and our soil over the years. In 1916 two young men named Clarence King (1902-1981) and John Davenport (1885-1965) bought about three acres bordering what is now Main Street from friendly white settlers there for $5 per acre - just enough money at that time to buy a small batch of tools needed for farming operations! They named their tract "King's Valley," after Clarence King's father who had died 2 years earlier while serving in World War I with the US forces! This section became known later as "Mitchell."Clarence King married Edith Beaverson (1898-1985) on November 15th 1918 at Stonewall Presbyterian Church north east cornerof Main Street & Haystack Hill Road in nearby Mount Rushmore National Monument while John Davenport married Bertha Kappeler (1897-1978) northeast cornerof Main Street & Haystack Hill Road less than two weeks later on December 5th 1918 at Stonewall Presbyterian Church northwest cornerofMain Street & Haystack Hill Road!

Mitchell is a small town in south central South Dakota, United States. It has a population of 514 as of the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1881 and named for General George Mitchell, who served as US Ambassador to Great Britain during the 1880s. The first settlers arrived in 1881 and the town was platted in 1883. The post office was established in 1886 and the first store opened in 1889. The first school was built in 1893 and the first doctor received his medical training from Dr. John Ritchie at Mitchell Hospital on Main Street. In 1907, Mitchell had a population of 205 residents and it grew rapidly with development of railroads linking it to Sioux City, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska. The present day community features an old-fashioned creamery (still operating), four churches (all Baptist), two schools (one high school, one middle school), a grain elevator, an ice plant, a telephone exchange, a health clinic (now closed), two golf courses (one pro-am) and three businesses: First National Bank; American Express; and Grain Elevator Service Company
