The Rapid City Air Force Deployed Gift History is a unique and impressive history of the air force in Rapid City, South Dakota. The gift history began in 1941 when pilots from the 5th Cavalry Regiment were sent to fight in World War II. They brought with them many gifts for their troops, including radios and other equipment. The gift history continued after the war, with the 2nd Infantry Division stationed in Rapid City until 1951. During this time, they received many donations from citizens and businesses alike. Many items that are now part of the museum such as helmets, rifles, vehicles and more were given during this time. The first year that the air force sent a gift-giving contingent to OIF was 2003. At that time, there were only sixGift Command detachments across the United States active in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). However, by deploying its Gift Command detachment to Iraq, the air force created a new tradition that continues today. This year’s deployment will mark the seventh consecutive year that members of the service have sent supplies and resources to our partners in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since 2002, when Congress authorizedOperation Noble Eagle (OIE), gifts have been critical to helping our troops achieve victory in both wars. In just one year from October 2002 through September 2003, more than $2 million had been collected through donations by civilians and military personnel working together on behalf of Operation Iraqi Freedom/OEF. By deploying its Gift Command detachment this year,the airforce is extending an olive branch back to our troops who continue providing essential services while they fight – no matter where they are located in the world.
