The United States Army was founded in 1846 and the first military unit to be called into service was the 1st U.S. Infantry Regiment, which arrived in South Dakota on July 6, 1876. The 1st US Infantry Regiment served until 1880 when it was disbanded and its soldiers were absorbed into the 2nd U.S. Infantry Regiment. In 1916, the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment was activated in South Dakota and served until 1918 when it also disbanded and its soldiers were absorbed into the 4th U.S. Infantry Regiment which arrived in Watertown on October 16, 1916 as part of World War I mobilization efforts. In World War II, the 7th Cavalry Brigade arrived in Watertown on September 8, 1942 as part ofArmy Ground Forces mobilization efforts following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor that occurred two days prior to their arrival at our shores On November 12, 1942 the brigade became an airborne brigade and participated in Operation Neptune's Spear during World War II which resulted in Japanese surrender at Tokyo Bay Since then there have been multiple deployments of army units to various countries around the world including Afghanistan where they fought a bloody war against NATO forces from 2001-2001; Iraq during Saddam Hussein's rule from 2003-2007; Sunita Bhabha Missionegroup deployment to Sri Lanka from 2007-2008; operations Support Activity (OSA) Kunar Province from 2009-2011;Multinational Force–Afghanistan (MNAFAG) offensive operation ‘Oruzgan’ from 2014-2015;and2016 Southern Syria Counterterrorism Coalition campaign “ Euphrates Shield” . All of these deployments have made Watertown their temporary home while other facilities are constructed or renovated nearby such as Fort Riley National Military Park located less than a mile away from town limits Today, with over 152 years of history behind us Army troops continue to serve our community by providing security services such as law enforcement and garrison duty domestically and abroad through partnerships with local police departments throughout South Dakota ; providing training for county sheriff deputies who work alongside them on crime prevention initiatives such as vehicle theft detection along with disaster relief activities during natural disasters like floods or wildfires As we head into another year full of festivities celebrating America's military heritage we can only imagine what kind of traditions will continue to be enjoyed by all involved over these next 365 days
