Watertown is a small town in southern South Dakota, located on the banks of the Missouri River. The first coffee house in Watertown was opened by John Fenton in 1875. In 1907, Harry Smith started the water tower and café which would become one of Watertown's most popular businesses. In 1928, the first radio station in South Dakota was licensed to Watertown. The popularity of radio led to an increase in business at the café and water tower. By 1942, all three businesses were combined into a single business, Harry Smith's Coffee Shop & Café. In 1975, Harry Smith's Cafe moved from its original location to its current location on Main Street. Today, Harry Smith's Coffee Shop & Café continues to be one of the most popular businesses in Watertown.
