Watertown is a small town in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Missouri River, about south of Pierre and east of Sioux Falls. Watertown is one of five towns in Pierre County and it forms part of the Pierre-Chouteau Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Watertown was French trader Antoine de La Salle in 1682. He named the area for his hometown, Rouen, Normandy, France. Watertown's early history can be traced back to 1872 when a group of citizens from nearby Aberdeen founded the town here as a winter trading post on the Missouri River for fur traders seeking passage downriver to Fort Snelling in Minnesota Territory under United States auspices during its Dakota Purchase process from Sweden. This new settlement grew rapidly due to its location near an important crossing point on the river where goods could be transported quickly and easily across country with minimal journey time or risk through Indian Country; also because Sioux Nation resources were available close at hand including timber, water buffalo robes, fishhooks and other items needed by Dakotans travelling upstream for trade with their traditional enemies (the Lakota). Apostate missionaries had already arrived in Watertown by 1870 and began proselytizing among local Native Americans which helped spur development hereabouts including schools (1875), churches (1877), hotels (1912) and other civic amenities that continue today such as a library (1974) and two restaurants/bars - The Fuzzy Wuzzy Inn & The Prairie Dog Cafe - both open since 1984! In 1916 Congress approved creation of Pierre County having jurisdiction over all but four surrounding counties: Douglas, Lincoln, McKenzie, Union - making Watertown - then still just a frontier hamlet - one of America’s “Great Villages”! As this fledgling county developed into an agricultural center with tens of thousands Of acres irrigated via major dams built between 1933-1945 by government agencies like Army Corps Of Engineers – resulting in numerous businesses locating hereabouts such as Eagle Ford Oil Company – Watertown came to enjoy national notoriety as “The DrinkingTown” while becoming also known for its annual Farmers' Market parade which attracts residents & visitors alike from around America each year on Saturday preceding Thanksgiving Day!
