Bartlett donated additional land for a second high school which he also leased to trustees until it became the current Hardin County Community College campus in 1951 when it merged with UT Chattanooga’s Old Main Campus to form one large university campus). A third high school (now known as “Hardin Middle/High School”) opened its doors in 1899 and served grades 6-12 until it closed down due to lack of enrollment during the Great Depression; however, part of its grandstand remain extant as an educational attraction today known as “the Bartholomew Gymnasium” after Mrs. Bartholomew (the original educator). Largely due to its location on the Cumberland River, Bartlett saw an increase in business and population during the late 1800s and early 1900s. However, during World War I (1914-18), many businesses closed their doors because of shortages of supplies caused by wartime rationing policies. During the 1920s and 1930s, however, there was an increased number of businesses open throughout downtown Bartlett due to a boom in construction activity related to new roads and bridges being built in the area; this included both local government projects such as expansion of public transportation systems as well as national infrastructure projects such as Interstate 20 (now George HW Bush Presidential Library). In recent years, much attention has been given to efforts by Mayor Andy Berke to revitalize downtown areas including Restore Downtown Chattanooga which includes addressing issues such as graffiti removal and improving sidewalks; while also creating incentives for development along Riverside Drive which runs through downtown Bardett; these efforts have helped attract more businesses back into town while also helping make downtown Bartholtte more walkable with new restaurants and shops opening up along both sides of Riverside Drive between Oakwood Avenue northward until just past First Baptist Church southward on Mockingbird Lane eastward until it intersects Greene Street eastward before running southeast onto Union Avenue where it ends at Fifth Street northeast towardSuwannee River National Forest
