Brownsville, Tennessee is a small town in the southern corner of Middle Tennessee. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson City- Clarksville-Marksburg, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brownsville's rich coffee history can be traced back to when it was founded as an agricultural community by Scotsmen in 1875. The first coffee plantation in Brownsville was built by David McMillan and his father, John McMillan. In 1880, James Gentry acquired a plantation in Brownsville and began to produce coffee for export. By 1907, Brownstown Coffee had become one of the leading coffee companies in the world with its own shipping line and port facilities. In 1916, Brownstown Coffee merged with Dutch Bros., making it one of the largest U.S.-owned coffee companies at that time. From 1916 until 1997, Brownstown Coffee was wholly owned by Dutch Bros.' parent company Philips Nederland BV (PNB) . From 1967 until 1991, Phillips Nederland BV (PNB) ran Brownstown Coffee's retail operation under the name "The World's Greatest Coffee". This retail brand operated more than 1,000 stores worldwide including 150 in the United States . Brownsville is a small town in southwestern Tennessee, and one of the oldest communities in the state. The area that now makes up Brownsville was first settled by Cherokee people in the 1800s. In 1834, General Andrew Jackson was elected president, and he moved the capital from Nashville to Brownsville. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, thanks to its location at a strategic point on the Cumberland River. By 1870, Brownsville had a population of about 770 people. During Reconstruction in Tennessee, Brownsville became an important center for anti-segregationist activities. In 1871, local blacksmith shop owner James Weldon Johnson organized a group of African Americans known as "The Brown Brothers" to challenge white supremacy in Brownsville. The group conducted numerous boycotts and protests against white employers until it disbanded in 1875. However, most of what is now Brownstown was developed around downtown Brownsville between 1915 and 1935; this includes much of what is today called Lawndale Heights neighborhood on the southeast side of town. Many old businesses remain standing including John's Coffee House (now closed), Merchant Tavern, Olde Hickory Store & Bakery (now open as an artisanal grocery store), and Peabody Hotel (now demolished).

Brownsville was founded in 1881 as a small community on the banks of the Donelson River. In 1903 it became an incorporated town. The current name of Brownsville comes from the local Browne family which settled there in 1881 and named their farm "Brownsville." The Donelson River served as a waterway for transportation and trade within and between Shelby County and Arkansas until it was cut off by the Appalachian Mountains in 1850. A sawmill built on the river in 1881 began operation, providing jobs for many residents of Brownsville. By 1903, significant growth had occurred in Brownsville due to its location near Interstate 40 and other businesses along both sides of the Donelson River. With rapid population growth, schools were built (the first public school opened in 1908), churches were erected (First Baptist Church now known as First Presbyterian), restaurants were established (Texaco gas station now known as Shoney's Burger House), and Brownstown apartments were developed (now called Brownstown Commons). In 1933, during World War II, Brownsville played host to one of America's largest military training exercises - Exercise Vanguard - employing more than 100,000 Americans from across America.
