The city of Columbia, Tennessee was first founded in 1811 by a group of farmers and traders. The area that now includes the city was originally part of the Cherokee Nation. In 1814, the United States acquired Knox County from the Cherokee Nation and established it as a territory. The town of Columbia was established in 1825, and by 1830, it had a population of about 100 people. In 1831, the Provisional Government of Tennessee was formed to govern the Territory after the collapse of Reconstruction in America. The first meeting for the provisional government took place at Columbia on February 14th. On March 3rd,1831, President James K. Polk approved creation of Knox County as a county within Tennessee with a population of 10,000 people. By 1840, only 2% of Knox County's population were white American citizens while 98% were Native Americans or African Americans who belonged to tribes living in areas including Knox County. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell thought he could win control over parts of central Tennessee if he moved against Union forces occupying Nashville. He ordered his troops to march into downtown Nashville on April 15th but were stopped by Union forces led by General Ulysses S Grant at Belle Meade Cemetery near downtown Nashville. As a result, Confederate General John Catton attacked Union forces at Franklin Bank Bridge near downtown Nashville on April 16th but failed to take advantage of Confederate Army weaknesses because he lacked artillery support from Corinth River Station upstream which would have allowed him to cross Franklin Bank Bridge easily and attack Union positions along Broadway Avenue southward from Belle Meade Cemetery which offered an open flank for Grant’s troops). Aftermath: A combined force composed principally infantry and artillery under General Jubal Early captured both bridges without any loss; this strategic maneuver removed one major threat that threatened Confederate capital Chattanooga while also providing valuable experience for Early’s successor John Custer as well as other Confederate commanders who would later attempt similar operations against Federal installations
Columbia, Tennessee is a small town located in the central region of the United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The town has been inhabited by humans for more than 10,000 years and traces its roots back to Paleo-Indian times. Columbia was founded by Captain James Robertson in 1799 as a trading post on the TN/KY border. In 1815, it became an incorporated village and was renamed for Columbia College in Lexington, Kentucky which had opened in 1795. In 1861, when Tennessee seceded from the Union and became Confederate Territory of East Tennessee (later West Tennessee), Columbia was among the few towns that remained within Confederate territory. Through this process, it came to be known as "the Confederacy's most loyal town". After Chattanooga defaulted on its war debt and taxes to Confederate President Jefferson Davis, many businesses closed their doors throughout Davidson County while people turned their backs on slavery and supported Davis' efforts to save what little remaining Union control there was in East Tennessee. When Union General Ulysses S Grant reached Corinth on April 6th 1865, he found that much of eastern Tennesse had fallen into ruin due to cotton famine caused by lack of export markets for our crops following Sherman's march through Georgia & Alabama two months earlier. He ordered his army into action against CSS Fort Donelson eight miles north of Corinth on July 16th 1865 just four days before Fort Donelson fell: This strategic victory allowed Union forces under General Donelson (a self-taught general) enter Nashville with relative ease without having fought a battle or lost any lives - allowing Reconstruction to proceed apace in east Tennesse without interruption or resistance from local residents who saw no value in surrendering their homes &orts without expecting anything in return... Columbia emerged unscathed from this debacle but its economy suffered greatly as business owners were forced out of Starkville & other nearby cities during Reconstruction period which saw high levels of poverty and illiteracy acrossTennessee... Today some descendants Of those who lived during Reconstruction contribute offensively to local politics by voting overwhelmingly Democratic after years OF being contentedly Republican... Beyond simply serving as a source of employment for locals during hard times; Columbia also played an important role politically due to its neutrality during both World Wars; hosting large military exercises such as airborne landings at Whiteman AFB during WWII which generated much publicity for Knoxville; playing hostess city upon McCracken Air Force Base opening which drew attention away from Knoxville until they moved out 3 years later;and hosting numerous foreign dignitaries visitingKnoxville during various periods thruout history... today some descendants OF those who lived during Reconstruction contribute offensively to local politics by voting overwhelmingly Democratic after years OF being contentedly Republican...

By 1840, there were over 100 people living in Columbia. The community was named for the then-new college town of Colombo, India, which had been founded by British missionaries in 1837.
