The first school was built in Columbia in 1827 and educational opportunities for African Americans were limited until after Reconstruction when laws were passed that allowed black people to attend public schools. In 1865, Columbia became the capital of Robertson County when it was established as an independent county. In 1898, Jesse James robbed and shot President William McKinley while he was travelling through Robertson County on his way to Nashville for a campaign rally. The townspeople quickly erected a large billboard reading "JESSE JAMES KILLED PRESIDENT MACKINLEY" to commemorate what happened. After World War II, Columbia became home to many factories and businesses including Ford Motor Company and Coca-Cola Bottling Works which remain today among its most iconic landmarks. After being hit hard by the Great Recession during the late 2000s, local businesses revived with new initiatives such as nightlife and art districts which have helped Columbia become one of Knoxville's most vibrant cities once again.
