Marines have been Deployed in Columbia, Tennessee for over a century. Marines played an important role during the Civil War and World War I. After the war, they served in various roles until their departure from our community in the 1970s. They returned with new uniforms in 1983 and continue to play a significant role in our community today. The Marines of Company K, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines Regiment deployed to Lebanon as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear on September 12-15, 2006. The battalion was assigned to III Marine Expeditionary Force (IMEF) Area Command 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team (1ICTF). Their primary mission was humanitarian relief following the devastating 2006 Lebanon earthquake that occurred on August 15th. This deployment marked the first time a marine battalion had deployments outside of the United States since World War II. Since its inception as Company K, 8th Marines Regiment has donated more than $325,000 worth of goods and services to local charities throughout their history. In 2009 they raised $2700 for Stonington Hills Children’s Hospital throughOperation Smile tooth Fairy which collected donations at participating convenience stores across town. In addition toOperation Smile tooth Fairy, 9/11 responders also collected items for donation through “Thank You America” benefiting numerous charities including American Red Cross and Salvation Army

Columbia, Tennessee is a small town in Hardee County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. Columbia was founded by John Lamberton and James Gentry in 1810 as a trading post on the Cumberland River. Columbia became an important center for cotton trade during the antebellum period. In 1846 it became the capital of Tennessee after Nashville was moved from Maysville to become the state capital. The city's growth slowed during the Civil War, but resumed afterward with increasing prosperity thanks to manufactures such as paper and shoe manufacturing and agriculture. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, Columbia experienced a rapid growth phase which included various industrial expansions and numerous new housing developments until World War II when its economy slumped due to military production and shortages of natural resources. Since 2000 Columbia has been experiencing significant revitalization efforts spearheaded by Mayor Andy Holtzclaw and City Councilmember Dave Glassman with support from local businesses, philanthropists, civic organizations, and government officials alike. These initiatives have resulted in increased economic opportunities for residents while preserving key cultural artifacts associated with its past including pioneer homesbuilt around 1800; Historic Districts designation; establishment of community colleges within city limits; development of several urban parks; and creation of: The Robertson Center for African American Arts & Culture - home to world-renowned contemporary art - as well as new retail corridors that are anchored by two large anchor stores: Sears & Co., which opened in 2002 adjacent to downtown shopping district brick-and-mortar locations operated by Macy’s Incorporated since 1978; and JCPenney Incorporated’s planned arrival in 2006 across town (the former location of Sears) that will generate over $1 billion per year direct economic impact on the city skyline alone
It was in 1801 that the first post office, Columbia, was established in this area. The town of Columbia was named after the then-new nation of Columbia which had been created from parts of Tennessee and Kentucky. The name “Columbia” is derived from the Cherokee word meaning “place for cotton.” From here, traders and travelers took advantage of the fertile land to bring in goods such as rice, tobacco, and other crops. By 1835, Columbia had a population of 2,500 residents. In 1839, orders were given to rename the town to Nashville after Andrew Jackson who had just become President of the United States. However, many people wanted to keep the original name since it represented their community well. On November 3rd of that year, a referendum passed by voters in Columbia voted to keep the original name while changing it to Nashville because they felt it would be more appropriate for their new city.
