Cookeville is a small town in Cookeville County, Tennessee, United States. It is the seat of Cookeville-Mauldin City School District. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. The community was founded by General James Robertson in 1819 as Fort Nashborough on an spit of land between the Cumberland River and Log Cabin Creek. He named it after his friend Major General Daniel Boone's home town of Nashborough, England. The fort served as a base for Indian campaigns against the Cherokees from 1796 to 1800 and also as a military installation for Confederate forces during the American Civil War. In 1862, Union general Ulysses S. Grant ordered all Confederate forces to evacuate Cookeville without warning before he moved downstream to take advantage of natural defenses along the Tennessee River below Nashville. In 1865, Union General Andrew Johnson issued orders that all Confederate forces within two miles (3 km) of Nashville must be destroyed or captured. This order caused much outrage in Cookeville because many citizens had been living within this radius for years without any danger from Union troops. Accordingly, General John Custer ordered his deputy commander in chief at Chattanooga, Samuel Gregg, to march into Cookeville with 5 companies of cavalry and several hundred infantrymen to demand surrendering residents turn over their weapons and munitions stockpile before moving on to other towns in central Tennessee. After some initial resistance, most residents surrendered unconditionally on July 12th 1865 under heavy fire from Custer's troopers and artillerymen while many women and children hid under tables or behind furniture until evacuation could begin across open ground nearby through narrow channels known as "the Gap".
