The Dickson Volunteer Infantry was a volunteer infantry regiment that served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized on September 3, 1861, at Dickson, Tennessee, and mustered into service on October 1. The regiment fought in the Battle of Chickamauga and other engagements until December 18, 1862. On January 7, 1863, the brigade of General James B. McPherson was transferred to General Don Carlos Buell's brigade and consolidated with Third Brigade under Colonel John Tipton. The united brigade participated in the fighting at Missionary Ridge and Cold Harbor before being withdrawn from the field on February 2nd for rest and reorganization. On May 9th 1865, the unit mustered out of service at Chattanooga and returned to their home state where they were disbanded on June 5th.
Dickson, Tennessee is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The town was named for General Dickson who fought in the American Civil War and later served as governor of Tennessee. Dickson has a post office that opened in 1828 and closed in 1922. The town had one store until it burned down in 1901. The first school was built on the site of the current school building in 1829. A Methodist church was also built here about this time. The first store in Dickson was operated by John Gentry and his brother James Gentry. In 1839, a sawmill started up and produced wood for local homes and businesses until it went out of business around 1850. Then came a cotton gin which became successful until it too went out of business around 1865-1866. In 1892, Jno Easley started a grocery store here which became very successful until he died in 1928(). His son-in-law conducted the store from then on until 1959 when it changed hands several times before finally closing down due to lack of sales among its customers over time (). Stonewall Mountain Baptist Church (now First Baptist Church) began services here about 1830 as an offshoot of an earlier group called North Side Christian Society (). Reverend Coffee founded this congregation after being inspired to do so while preaching near Chattanooga (). When Coffee's congregation grew large enough, he organized what would become Stonewall Mountain Baptist Church (), now First Baptist Church (). Rev John Hines founded West Side Presbyterian Church () from scratch about 1840 (); however that church forfeited its charter effective February 1861 because most residents did not support secession during the American Civil War (). After Hines' death about 1860 (), worshipers turned to First Presbyterian Church () for services until 1862 when West Side PresbyterianChurch lost its charter again because most locals did not support secession during the American Civil War(). Afterwards some people within both churches banded together to form what would become East Side PresbyterianChurch (), now First Baptist Church (). The present day incarnation of East Side PresbyterianChurch began services on October 15th 1870 when Reverend Wm Pemberton ordained Dr Caryl Chatham as their new pastor (). Reverend Wm Pemberton served as their pastor from 1870 through 1907 when they merged into First BaptistChurches () with Revs Aimee Ladd and Saundra Coleman becoming pastors thereafter.). During World War II many residents took up arms against Nazi Germany or joined forces with other patriotic groups such as resistance movements like VE Day ())

In 1875, Dickson was a small town of about 150 people. The community's first school was built in what is now the downtown area and opened in 1876. In 1903, the town incorporated and renamed itself after General David Dickson, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. Dickson has experienced many types of growth over its history. For example, it became an agricultural center during the early 1800s due to its fertile land and good irrigation systems. After the Civil War, businesses began to grow in prominence as cotton farming became more important in Tennessee. During World War II, Dickson joined other towns along the Tennessee-Alabama border in support of America's war effort.
