Elizabethton is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. Elizabethton is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area and is one of the most populous cities in Davidson County. It lies on the Cumberland River and is bordered by Lebanon to the north, Hickory to the east, Oak Ridge to the south and west, and Sparta to the northwest. The downtown core is home to two restaurants - Tootsie's Pizza and Red Lobster - as well as several stores including Hecht's Hardware, Kmart, Lowe's Home & Hardware, JCPenney, Vetco Pharmacy and Music City Bank. Elizabethton has a strong history as an agricultural community with cornbread being a staple dish. According to legend, Adam founded Elizabethton in 1814 when he took his family from Transylvania due to religious persecution there. In 1815 he named it after his daughter Zerubbabelia (meaning "flowery field"). By 1830 over 100 families had settled in what would become Elizabethton. By 1840 only 10 families remained; however by 1850 over 300 people lived in town. The first school was built in1853 and classes began on October 3rd that year. Elizabethton is a small town located in Davidson County, Tennessee. The population was 3,679 at the 2010 census. Elizabethton has been called the "Gateway to the Valley" for its location on the Cumberland River and its many agricultural products. Elizabethton was founded in 1802 by developer James Fenton and his wife, Jane. The town was named after Mrs. Fenton's brother-in-law, Sir John Elizabethton of Essex in England who donated land for the settlement. The first settler in Elizabethton was James Fenton who arrived with his family in 1802 from Scotland. He built a cabin on what is now known as Main Street and started trading goods with other farmers around this area. In 1806, James Fenton's son Hugh erected a log cabin on what is now Pulaski Avenue which became home to the primary school until it burned down in 1907. In 1810, another Scotsman named David Thomson set up a store at what is now Ninth Street and began trading items such as lumber and flour with other farmers around this area. By 1830, there were over 20 stores operating within a radius of 2 miles ofElizabethton center. In 1838 Governor John Bell appointed Jens Jensen as surveyor for Davidson County and based upon his findings about Elizabethton he recommended that it be given additional government funding to help improve infrastructure including roads, schools and churches which would then allow more people to settle hereabouts including slaves brought over from Africa during the late 1800s into TN via Union Road travel through Knoxville/Tennessee City thereby creating an entirely new community Lastly Jensen recommended that Elizabethton be renamed "Daviess County". This name change came into effect on November 1st of that year when General William Troup traveled through Davidson County bringing congratulations from Governor Bell following Tennessees' victory against Mexico at Vallejo Field outside NashvilleTN resulting in NAFTA being ratified giving birth to today’s United States! After years of discussion among local officials relative to development opportunities within their boundaries (mainly due to lack of available land) post office construction finally began operations at present day Second street corner back when cannonballs could still be heard bouncing off buildings off High Bridge Rd just upstream from where I am sitting! It took almost ten years before trains starting running regularly between Knoxville & Chattanooga making this place one continuous village enjoying high levels of commerce throughout most any season! All along Second Street you can see evidence left behind by those early settlers like building stone walls & pickets still standing tall today despite repeated water damage multiple times!!! There are places like Dogpatch just west of town limits which have only recently become developed beyond being used as cattle pastures again ??? We must all appreciate our history while living cheek by jowl with it everyday!!!!!!!!!!!!!
