Gallatin is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. Gallatin is located on the east bank of the Gallatin River. It is bordered by Hardin County to the north and west, Lamar County to the south, and Middle Tennessee State University to the east. The first permanent settler in what is now Gallatin was James Robertson in 1811. He built a cabin on an island in the river and named it after his father-in-law, Angus Robertson, who had also founded what is now Knoxville. In 1816 James Robertson granted two tracts of land to John Crouch for $25 apiece. In 1818 Alexander Forrest erected a dam across the river near present-day Glasgow Boulevard and renamed it Fort Knox after General Andrew Jackson's victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at Yorktown four years earlier. The name stuck and Fort Knox became an important military base during both Union and Confederate times. In 1861 when Nashville was burned down by Confederate forces, President Abraham Lincoln called for help from General Nathan Bedford Forrest to save Chattanooga from being destroyed as well. Forrest arrived with 3,500 men within 24 hours but found that only 1,500 men were available due to problems with transportation and logistics. After several days of skirmishing he withdrew his force back upriver towards Chattanooga while 5th Tennessee Infantry Regiment under Lieutenant Colonel Donelson attacked Confederate positions upstream along the Rabbit River Bridgehead

Gallatin was a town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,433 at the 2010 census. The first post office for Gallatin was established on November 12, 1827. It was moved to its present location in 1839. The town came about from the fact that General James Wilkinson and his army were stopped at the railroads near here on their way to battle against Andrew Jackson in 1812. A group of men decided to meet Wilkinson and offer protection from Indian attack if he would come to Gallatin and purchase land. Wilkinson agreed and built a cabin here in 1814. The first store in Gallatin opened its doors on December 15, 1840. It had been started by Mrs. Elizabeth Parkhurst as an addition to her farm property next door which she shared with her husband John Prentice Prentice II., the son of John Prentice I., also a pioneer settler in Knox County. The store operated until it burned down on October 10, 1865 while still under construction by developer Jno Ewing of Nashville after being condemned by local officials who did not believe that there would be enough traffic demand for such an innovative business venture outside of downtown Nashville when new transportation options became available around that time including streetcars and buses! In 1860, Drury Lumber Company founded its sawmill northeast of town along the Cumberland River where it continues operations today (and is one of only two remaining mills operating within commuting distance of downtown Nashville). In 1870s this mill produced more than 4 million board feet per month which caused much social commentary because at that time lumbering was considered highly skilled laborintensive industry with high wages associated with it – especially given how small towns like Gallatin were then compared to larger cities like Nashville or Memphis! In 1901-1902 both sides of Vanderbilt Avenue between Broadway and First Street were widened into two wide streets called “Gallatin Boulevard” as part of Mayor George Waddell’s initiative known as “Nashville's New Roads Program” which aimed to improve public transportation access throughout the city center while also creating jobs through various infrastructure projects across different industrial sectors! In 1821, theuning family migrated from Germany to Gallatin, Tennessee. The first settler was Johann Theuning who arrived in 1821. He and his wife, Anna Maria (née Hesse), had two children, Friedrich and Wilhelm. In 1824, Gottlieb Theuning set up a log cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River. By 1830, he had a gristmill and sawmill operation in operation. In 1831-32, Johann Theuning built a house on the current site of Washington Elementary School. In 1834-35, Gottlieb Theuning erected a large frame house on what is now Second Street south of Main Street in Gallatin. This house served as the home of both Gottlieb and his wife until their deaths in 1865 and 1865 respectively. Their son Friedrich also lived at this address for some time before moving to Illinois. In 1840-41, Arent von Luney came to Gallatin from Germany with his family and started a bakery business opposite Second Street east of Main Street which remain active to this day. He also raised hogs and pigs for market purposes on his farm west of town near present day University Road). Von Luney's enterprise flourished until about 1865 when it went bankrupt due to competition from larger businesses within town limits (the original village boundaries).
