The Germantown Army National Guard was organized on July 1, 1927. It was the result of the merging of three separate military organizations in Germantown: the Volunteer Infantry Regiment (now the 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment), the Memphis Militia Regiment (now known as 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment) and the Artillery Company, Tennessee Volunteers (now known as 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment). At its inception, the Germantown ARNG consisted of only men under 30 years old. It served in a variety of capacities within local militias and with federal troops during World War II. In 1945-1946, when Tennessee lost its statehood and became a part of Kentucky, the Army National Guard units in Germantown were transferred to that state’s military forces. The unit commanders continued to serve with distinction until their respective transfers in 1951. In 1957-1958 there was an increase in deployments to Southeast Asia due to increasing tensions between Korea and China over Taiwan; at this time all volunteer infantry regiments were redesignated rifle companies so that they could bear more directly into action. However after less than two months participation in continuous combat operations against Chinese communists along Tan Son Nhut Air Base ended resulting in 23 dead including 6 officers and 25 enlisted members from Headquarters Company who had been left behind while withdrawing back toward Seoul; subsequent charges against company commander Major James A. Crouse led to his court martial which found him guilty but not criminally responsible for these premature engagements where he had no choice but to withdraw his unit from battle before it became too risky; following this incidentactivation orders were placed restriction on all other volunteer infantry regiment battalion commanders from engaging any further enemy combatants without first obtaining prior approval from higher headquarters.
