Germantown is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson signed the Treaty of Gadsden which ceded all of Alabama to the United States. However, Georgia still claimed some land in what is now Germantown. In 1836, General John Cordon surrendered Atlanta to Georgia, ending the war for control over that city. The Treaty of Montgomery allowed Georgia to keep some land east of the Chattahoochee River and west of the Cumberland Gap. This area included much present-day Germantown. The town's first courthouse was built in 1837 on the site of an old trading post.
