Greeneville is a small town located in Davidson County, Tennessee. It was founded in 1817 and has been its home for over 120 years. The town has a population of around 9,000 people and many businesses and services within its boundaries provide essential residents with access to cultural events, shopping opportunities, education, health care and other amenities. The history of Greeneville begins with the arrival of pioneers from Kentucky in 1817. They were seeking new land to explore after being driven out of their original homesteads by Native Americans. As the area was surveyed for sale or development, some settlers began arriving who had connections to the capital city of Nashville. One such man was Captain John Sevier who became owners of an enslaved person named Tom Brown which he leased back to the Blacksmith Shop Company. When Sevier died in 1820 his children took control of Brown and continued working it until 1830 when they sold it back to Sevier's daughter Lucy as payment for her freedom from slavery. During this time period there were also several accidents that caused damage or loss on local farms which led to increased demand for employees at the Blacksmith Shop Company who were able to rebuild quickly. This coincided with another key event that helped start Greeneville off as a thriving community: The first school opened its doors in 1827 as part of a larger educational initiative spearheaded by Governor James Robertson intended to improve life opportunities for black Tennesseans living outside Nashville. As more people arrived in Greeneville they started buying property parcels one-by-one until all but one block along Church Street had been developed into housing units by 1830 when Isaac Swayne purchased the remaining lot from Mrs.(Lydia) Stephenson (1801-1872). At this point things really got going; commercial enterprises came online including Granny Smith’s grocery store (originally operated out of her home), Drury’s mercantile establishment, banks and two churches: First Presbyterian (founded 1795) followed by Second Presbyterian (formed 1865). Swayne played an important role during these early years as he donated land north of Market Street where later known as Swayne Park would be established; this area now houses many local businesses including KFC/China Towne & Thirdman Grain Supermarket before ending up adjacent to renovated A&P Shopping Center once again becoming quite active with various retailers having since taken occupancy ranging from Macy’s department stores through JCPenney alterations stores through Sears Home Hardware stores before finally closing shop altogether in 2018 after 146 years! In November 1865 General Jubal Early arrived at Greeneville on horseback accompanied by his brother Elijah Early while on their way westward towards Chattanooga looking for followership among Tennessean Confederate troops then stationed near Memphis Arkansas Territory line under command Major General Beauregard Johnston complete with 1/5th Tennessee Infantry Regiment under Colonel John Bell Hood situated east side Broad River Bridge opposite current day intersection Main Street & Trinity Church Road serving both Rebel camps East & West sides main street today Photo Courtesy Mr./Mrs./Sonny Youngblood
