Greeneville, Tennessee is a small town located in Hardin County, Tennessee. It was founded in 1881 by two men named John and James Green. The first store in Greeneville was opened on the corner of Second Avenue and Elm Street. The town grew rapidly from its modest beginnings and by 1907 had a population of over 300 people. By 1918, the population had reached 1,100 people and the town name was changed to Greeneville to reflect its growing importance. The early coffee roasters in Greeneville were mostly family-owned businesses. One of the most prominent roasters at this time was J.B. Cunningham who started his business in 1916. In 1927, Cunningham merged with another local coffee shop, The Coffee House, to form what is now known as Cunningham Coffee & Tea Company. Over the years, many other important coffee companies have closed down or been bought out before becoming defunct such as The Coffee House (1984), World's Fair Coffee (1981), National Coffee Association (1978), and Roaster Shop (1976). Greeneville is a city in Tennessee and the county seat of Greene County. The population was 9,912 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Tennessee. It is located on the edge of Chattanooga and is bordered by Monroe County to the northwest, Hamilton County to the northeast, and Coffee County to the south. The first permanent settler in Greeneville was James White. He built a log cabin on what is now US 278 in 1825. In 1830, White married Anna Ford and they settled down near present-day Greeneville Boulevard and Shepherdsville Road. The Fords had six children: John (1830–1902), Mary (1832–1920), James (1835–1910), Anna (1839–1914), Andrew (baptized 1841), and Orson Fenton White (1846–1920). In 1836, Aaron Burr bought 2 acres of land from James White for $100. Burr founded what would later become known as Burr School which served as a day school for white students until 1938 when it became an all-black school. In 1840, John Forster married Martha Hawkins who also owned land east of town along Shepherdsville Road which she used for farming purposes until her death in 1921. In 1845, Jesse Ladd purchased 640 acres between US 278/Shepherdsville Road and Knoxville Pike from Drury Wagon Works owner Ebenezer Chandler for $5 per acre ($40 per square mile). Ladd named his tract "Greeneville" after nearby Greeneville Township in England where he had been born into a prominent family of Scottish descent some years earlier. A post office called Greeneville was established in 1850, but no mail arrived there until 1861 due to postal service being discontinued due to Union military occupation during the American Civil War. When Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest raided Union forces at Chickamauga Creek on October 16th 1863 – less than two weeks after General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House – local residents looted common stores available for looting within sight of Federal troops retreating back across Chickamauga River under heavy fire from Federal artillerymen positioned about two miles away with orders not to engage any soldier or civilian except surrendering officers! One resident reported that over 100 items were taken from his store including "several barrels of whiskey", four pistols & eighteen rounds of ammunition; however only three barrels were found when inventory was returned three days later! A large quantity of clothing including uniforms worn by Confederate soldiers was also looted although no weapons were taken! President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation condemning this behavior commonly known as "the moral turmoils around Chattanooga". After Reconstruction ended federal troops withdrew from TN while most counties reorganized themselves into their current form with African Americans serving as sheriff’s deputies etcetera many people moving out west leaving their homes behind since they could not get government jobs or property elsewhere so businesses closed up shop especially oil wells etc….. erasing much progress made during previous black rule….. till recently greenevilles economy has been based mostly off tourism thanks largely to chattanooga casinos

Greeneville is a small town located in Davidson County, Tennessee. The population was 4,000 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville-Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greeneville was founded in 1836 by Andrew Jackson and named for him. Greeneville is one of the few remaining towns in Davidson County that were founded before the creation of Davidson County as a county in 1839. The first black resident of Greeneville was William Lyon Mackenzie who bought land there in 1837. Greeneville's first store opened on Main Street in 1838. The first post office opened in 1840 and was called "Mackenzie". By 1850, all but two businesses had closed due to lack of customers or competition from larger towns within the county such as Nashville and Clarksville. In 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early passed through Greeneville on his way to battle Union General Ulysses S Grant at Gettysburg; this event helped spur development around Greeneville and other rural areas within east Tennessee during the American Civil War. The last post office closed in 1968 and most residents moved out by then, making Greeneville an unincorporated community until 2000 when it incorporated into city limits as part of nearby Antioch, Tennessee
