Rear Admiral Goodwin was appointed Superintendent of the Coast Guard Service at Fort Knox, Kentucky on October 1, 1923. He served as Superintendent until his retirement on May 15, 1931. In his retirement he became a Judge Advocate General for the Tennessee National Guard and died in Nashville on January 12, 1942. His wife Alice A. Goodwin also served in the Coast Guard and died in 1978.

It was founded in 1836 as part of the Jackson Purchase by General Andrew Johnson and named for his predecessor on the Union Pacific Railroad, James Greenleaf Johnston. Greeneville is located at (35.814256, -86.683333). According to the USGS National Geodetic Survey, it has an elevation of 1128 feet (342 m). According to the 2010 census, Greeneville had a total area of , all land. As of the census[2] of 2000,[3] there were 11,622 people living in Greeneville City limits. Of these, 9,717 (78%) lived in households and 456 (24%) lived in non-residential buildings or structures. There were no housing units built before 2000 that are still standing today; all have been demolished or replaced since then by new construction projects

Greeneville is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. The first permanent settler in what is now Greeneville was James Hance on May 24, 1796. He named his land for George Washington – Hance's Valley being just east of where Mount Vernon now stands. In 1837, John Denny founded the town of Nashville and named it after himself because he had seen an ad in a newspaper for "a pleasantly situated village called Greeneville" in Davidson County. The first post office was established in Greeneville on January 10, 1838. In 1865, General Robert Ewell decided to make Greeneville his campaign headquarters during the American Civil War due to its strategic location between Chattanooga and Knoxville and its close proximity to Union forces camped nearby on Lookout Mountain. When Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union forces near Greenevillo Creek on July 1, 1865, General Ewell ordered his men to cross the creek bridge and fight their way up the mountain while he retreated across Lookout Mountain towards Chattanooga. As they crossed intoUnion territory from Greeneville Creek Bridge over Briscoe River (now known as Colonel John Bate Bridge), Confederate snipers shot them dead or wounded many of them before withdrawing back down the mountain under cover of darkness. While Confederate forces were retreating through Greeneville Creek Bridge site, 4-5 Union militiamen were killed when they tried to stop them After General Robert Ewell's death in 1865, control of Greeneville passed from military hands to local political leadership until 1947 when it became part of the municipality of Nashville proper which then merged with other municipalities forming Metropolitan Nashville District #1 effective November 3rd, 1997
Greeneville, Tennessee was founded in 1802 by James Robertson and is the oldest settlement within the current boundaries of Franklin County. The town was named for General Greeneville, a brigadier general in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first settler to arrive in what is now Greeneville was Andrew Johnson.
