In 1831, General John Coker's army invaded Tennessee and captured Nashville; this event led to a huge population growth in Greeneville because so many people were now living near where military units were stationed. As demand for coffee grew, George began to concentrate his roasting operation on only one type of beans – arabica beans – which gave him a better product that sold at a higher price point. He also started manufacturing his own cups and packaging products. Greeneville has been part of the Memphis metropolitan area since 1965. The first permanent white settlers in what is now Greeneville were families from Cumberland County, Virginia who arrived in 1796 and 1801. They named their new settlement after Lord Fairfax's home country of England. A post office called "Greeneville" was established in 1812, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, when Memphis became the capital of Tennessee, Greeneville became its second city by virtue of its location at the nexus of Interstate 65 and State Route 66 (now I-270). Hargrave operated a grocery store until 1840 when he opened an inn that still stands today - The White House Inn & Suites - across from Interurban Railroad Station #2 on Third Avenue South in downtown Greensville. From this humble beginning sprang what would become one of Tennessee's most important businesses - Hargrave Feeding & Grain Company Ltd., which merged with Archer Daniels Midland Co., Incorporated (now Anheuser-Busch InBev) in 1984 to form Budweiser USA Incorporation Limited Partnership – America’s third-largest beer company behind Miller Brewing Company (USA) and Coca Cola Refreshment Corporation (UK).
