Jackson, Tennessee is a town in east-central Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,098 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Jackson was founded by frontiersman John C. Calhoun in 1819 and named for General Andrew Jackson. The first post office in Jackson was set up on December 16, 1824, three days after it was established in what is now Interstate 40 between Memphis and Nashville. In 1865, when General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House following his surrender of all Confederate forces outside of Virginia City Texas he left behind a large quantity of supplies including nearly 2 million pounds (910 metric tons) of flour and other goods which turned up on marketplaces throughout America one week later despite being stored under lock and key by military authorities awaiting instructions to destroy them or distribute them among their troops retreating through Central America across Mexico into south Texas - an order never received!
