The USAF has a deployable Gift of War Museum which is open to the public. The museum is located at Holloman AFB, New Mexico and covers the history of air warfare from its beginning in 1917 to present day. There are displays on everything from World War II aircraft to modern war machines. In addition, there are several galleries that focus on specific areas such as the Weapons of Mass Destruction Gallery, Air-to-Air Combat Gallery, and Missile Defense Gallery. The museum also features an exhibit hall with more than 100 different items ranging from weaponry to uniforms to memorabilia. There are also several restaurants within walking distance of the museum so visitors can enjoy a meal while they visit.
The Johnson City Air Force Base deployed the United States' 1st Cavalry Division, The Browning Sniper Battalion and thegt. Maj. Gen. Leroy J. Butler's 2d Infantry Brigade Combat Team ( brigade combat team = a unit of infantry sent into battle as part of an infantry brigade) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on Dec. 14-15, 2003. The 1st ACF was also responsible for providing security for the IFOR peacekeeping force known as "The Multinational Force and Observation Squadron."
Johnson City is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Johnson City is located on the Cumberland River and includes parts of the towns of Henderson and Greeneville. The community has been known since 1837 as "Junction" because it was at that point where two wagon trains intersected while traveling from Nashville to Memphis. After a few years, settlers decided to name their new community after General Ulysses S. Grant because he had been bom there in 1784 and had fought in the American Revolution. Johnson City prospered from its location on an important trading route between Knoxville and Chattanooga and from its close proximity to both state capitals. In 1864, when Union forces captured Fort Donelson in Chattanooga, Johnson City became one of several eastern Tennessee communities that sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War. Many residents returned home after the war but many others stayed in Johnson City to rebuild following Reconstruction which lasted until about 1870s when cotton mills closed down and peopleigrated out for good Reasons such as political instability caused by Northern carpetbaggers coming into Southern markets after Reconstruction ended (see also: Ku Klux Klan). In February 1865 Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived at Johnson City with his army seeking refuge from Union forces encamped near Chattanooga; they were joined there by 400 Free State soldiers led by Major General John Hunt Morgan who had come south to help them join up with Confederate Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Forrest's brigade under Lt.-Gen Earl Beauregard Jr.. The battle that ensued near what is now downtown Johnson City resulted in over 50 deaths on both sides before Confederate troops retreated back towards Nashville under cover of darkness leaving behind more than 2,000 casualties including women and children who were marched off into slavery along with men who remained fighting for their country (the largest forced migration in American history). During World War II a munitions plant called "Majestic" was built on land now used for agriculture not far from downtown Johnson city; it operated until 1963 when it was shut down due to air pollution problems caused by production of plutonium stored there; subsequently environmental restoration projects began which have made Majestic one of America's most restored historical sites (site visit instructions are available online). From there he took on a similar role with Headquarters AFSC when it moved from San Diego, California to RAF Akrotiri on Cyprus in 1969. This set an example that other commands followed suit so that all services could participate in this unique program which continues today!
