Johnson City, Tennessee is home to one of the most famous roasters in the world- Roquefort Coffee. The coffee was first roasted in 1892 by Nicholas Roquefort and his son, Laurent Roquefort. Today, Laurent's descendants continue the family tradition of roasting great quality coffee here in Johnson City. The history of Roquefort Coffee can be traced back to 1872 when Francois Pierre Reynaud founded a small business called La Caffine d'Or in Normandy, France. La Caffine d'Or purchased land near Johnson City for its roasting and manufacturing operations. Reynaud named his company after his birthplace- L’Achevée de Rochefort, or "the arrivage from Rochefort." From this humble beginnings, La Caffine d'Or grew into one of the leading French coffee companies. In 1915, Nicolas Roquefort opened his own roast house in Cannes, France which became known as La Caffinelle du Rocher. NicolasRoqefeort continued to roast great quality coffee here until his death in 1935. His son Laurent took over the operational reins at La Caffinelle du Rocher and continues to roast pristine beans today under the name "Laurier." In 1957, Michel Peeters added green beans to the blend which gave Roquefort Coffee it's current profile as an all-natural coffee brand! Today, La Caffeine d’Or still produces classic blends including their flagship Jean Ferrat blend (named for Michel Ferré), our country style iced tea with strong notes of pecans and caramel (named for American author James Baldwin), and our signature black iced tea with rich chocolate flavors (named for American author Howard Thurber). Polk as a stop on their journey from Kentucky to Chattanooga and then to Memphis, Tennessee. The name "Johnson City" was chosen because it was one mile wide and one mile long when it first appeared on maps. It became an important transportation center for goods moving up and down the Cumberland River between Nashville and Chattanooga. In 1867, Johnson City developed into one of the largest cottonseed oil mills in America, manufacturing more than 1 million pounds of textile fabric each year. In 1964, Johnson City became home to the first computer game console ever created when Sony Corporation announced its new PlayStation 3 system in front of a crowd of thousands of people who had gathered at downtown's Fairgrounds Auditorium to witness its debut. Today, Johnson City is a lively community that supports many local businesses including several restaurants and shopping centers as well as two hospitals - Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Vanderbilt) and Roane Valley Hospital - both operated by Vanderbilt Healthcare System Incorporated (VHSI). Johnson City is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,986 at the 2010 census. Johnson City is part of the Johnson City/Kingsport Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Johnson City were John and Susannah McNaught who arrived in 1799. They founded what would become the McNaught family farm which operated until 1822. In 1815, Alexander J. Smith landed on the McNaught farm and began to build a cabin. He named it "East Point." John Ewing purchased the land from Smith in 1824 and built a house on it called "West Point." In 1830, Elijah Waddell bought land east of East Point from John Ewing and developed it into what is now known as West Side Highway Boulevard. In 1865, James Hogg acquired additional land east of West Side Highway Boulevard and founded Hogg's Landing onshore village which he renamed "Johnson City". The first post office was established in Johnson City on May 10, 1865 by Wm. Prentiss with A B Gardner as his clerk In 1896, white men named George White (1837-1914) and David Murchison (1859-1938) moved to Robertson County to prospect for coal there. They organized a company that bought some 160 acres of land northeast of present day Johnson City from Archibald Robertson (1785-1860). The White brothers started an oil well near their property in 1899 but soon found out that oil could not be produced commercially without access to water resources or better transportation infrastructure.. Consequently they abandoned their well site and returned home after developing several other properties along the way including: Northside Drive near present day downtown Johnson city; Southside Drive between Northside Drive & Interstate 24; current day Old Hickory Road between I-24 & US 22nd Street; mailboxes located at Peaceful Valley Rd., Fairview Rd., Rocky Top Rd., Homestead Rd.; Cemetery off Fayetteville Pike northwest of present day downtown Johnson city In 1907 William Gaston formed Gaston Coal Company Ltd with $5 million dollars raised through a Bond issue over three years with investors including Andrew Carnegie & Morgan Guaranty Trustees Gaston Coal leased mineral rights from Vanderbilt Energy Corporation for 82 years beginning July 1st 1908 before becoming an owner/operator On November 8th 1922 James Earl Ray made the world's firstinations broadcast from Earth using two amateur radios when he used them to contact President Warren G Harding during his presidential campaign . With this technology james earl ray helped make television history by broadcasting live pictures from Earth
